What's the biggest hazard risk where you live?

San Mateo County's draft Local Hazard Mitigation Plan is open for public comment, and we want to hear what worries you most where you live. Wildfire? Flood? Quake? Extreme heat?

The plan shapes how all 20 cities, unincorporated communities, and special districts plan to mitigate against potential damage from natural hazards. Your input matters.

We want input from residents, businesses, and community organizations. Tell us where the plan is strong, what it misses, and what you would add.

Myth: During an emergency, I'll just grab my pets and go.
Unfortunately, it's not always that easy if they're hiding, you can't find a leash, or don't have enough carriers.

The reality is, in an emergency, there's often no time.

Plan and prepare now!
Get your pets' Go Bags packed and have a plan for how they'll be transported during an evacuation.

Reality check: Most of us in the Bay Area live fewer than 10 miles from a major fault line, which can cause damaging earthquakes. 🫨

The San Andreas fault line runs along the Sonoma Coast through the Santa Cruz Mountains, and the Hayward fault line runs along the hills on the east side of San Francisco Bay.

Numerous other faults are also capable of causing damaging earthquakes, too.

So if you feel the ground shaking:
DROP, COVER, and HOLD!

If you're in a condo with lots of windows, move away from them in case of broken glass.
If you're in a home in a tsunami zone, evacuate to higher ground or a higher floor.

Plan and prepare so you can stay safe in an earthquake!

You're ready for any at-home emergencies with:

✔️ An evacuation plan
✔️ A Go Bag

But what happens if you're not home when alerts hit?

Whether you're at work, school, or another area you frequently visit, make sure you always know your:
✔️ Zone
✔️ Evacuation routes
✔️ Designated meeting spot for your household
✔️ Status by signing up for the Genasys Protect app and SMC alerts

To be really prepared: have a Go Bag in your car at all times.

Make sure your plan has a backup plan. Prepare and be ready for emergencies no matter where you'll be!
