Earlier today, Brisbane Police Department personnel assisted in the rescue of a young California sea lion found wandering near Sierra Point Parkway by the DoubleTree Hotel.
The seal was initially spotted by an off-duty Brisbane Police Officer on his way to work after he observed the animal crossing the roadway and heading toward the northbound Highway 101 on-ramp. Concerned for the safety of both the seal and motorists, the officer used his personal vehicle to help slow traffic and contacted Brisbane Police Department personnel for assistance.
Brisbane Police Department officers quickly responded to the area, secured traffic, and worked to safely contain the seal while awaiting the arrival of personnel from The Marine Mammal Center. Using specialized animal control equipment, officers were able to safely keep the seal from wandering into traffic or onto the freeway.
Rescue personnel later advised that they had been attempting to locate this seal for the past several days after sightings near Coyote Point and surrounding shoreline areas. The young seal was determined to be malnourished and in need of urgent care. The Marine Mammal Center transported the animal to their veterinary hospital where it will receive treatment and rehabilitation, with the goal of being released back into its natural environment.
This incident also serves as an important reminder to the public: if you encounter marine wildlife in distress, please do not attempt to handle, feed, move, or approach the animal yourself. Wild marine mammals can become stressed, injured, or unpredictable when approached by the public – causing safety concerns for both the animal and humans. Instead, maintain a safe distance of at least 50 yards and contact trained professionals at The Marine Mammal Center at 415-289-SEAL (7325).
We are grateful for the teamwork displayed today between Brisbane Police Department personnel and The Marine Mammal Center in helping ensure Sierra received the care she needed safely and successfully.
