Did you know? 🤔Three of the top five most common hazards in Adams County are severe weather hazards! Of course, severe weather isn’t our only risk, but it is certainly the most common hazard we face county-wide.

Today for National Preparedness Month, we’re taking a look at the most common hazards that impact our county to better understand the risks we should be planning for in our personal preparedness plans.

In Adams County, some of the most common hazards include:

🌩 Severe Thunderstorms 🌩

ALL of Adams County is at risk for severe thunderstorms!

On average, the county experiences 40-50 severe weather events annually.

Thunderstorms are the originators of other threats and can contain damaging winds, hail, lightning, heavy rain and flash floods, and even tornadoes.

🌪 Tornadoes 🌪

Did you know? Adams County is the second most tornado-prone county in Colorado.😱

Tornadoes typically occur in late spring through late summer (May-August), with June being the peak month for tornado occurrence in Colorado.

Tornadoes are most likely to occur in the afternoon hours, and, for Adams County, primarily east of I-25.

🌊Flooding🌊

While flooding can occur due to infrastructure failure in Adams County, most events are associated with natural causes, such as heavy rains from thunderstorms. 🌧

Western Adams County sits in the South Platte River Basin and periodically floods during heavy rains, especially in the springtime when strong storms combine with snow melt.

Urban parts of the County have a greater risk of localized flooding during strong thunderstorms.

🔥Wildfire🔥

Wildfire risk across Adams County varies widely. In general, risk of grassland or wildland fire is higher in the eastern half of the county, but the risk of a Wildland Initiated Community Conflagration (WICC) is higher in urban areas that boarder open spaces, wildland spaces, and other natural features.

☢️Hazardous Materials☢️

Because of the wide range of industry in our county, the risk of a hazardous materials incident is higher here than in some other counties.

Social media is quickly becoming the best way to find out the most up to date information during emergencies or disasters, especially when situations are changing rapidly. Reliable organizations to follow include the official accounts for your county or city, local police and fire departments, and your emergency management agency. ⚠️Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEAs)⚠️

Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEAs) come from government agencies, including the National Weather Service, and are sent to your phone when issued. Make sure you have WEAs enabled on your phone ⬇

📲For iPhone: Go to Settings -> Notifications -> Toggle Emergency Alerts & Public Safety Alerts to “On”

📲For Android: Go to Settings -> Notifications -> Advanced Settings -> Wireless Alerts -> Toggle Allow Alerts to “On”

These options are only three of the available ways to get information during emergencies or disasters -- Physical hardware, like NOAA Weather Radios, and phone or desktop applications (apps), like WatchDuty, can supplement information found through the sources above.
