To whom it may concern,

Please accept this letter of support of behalf by the Brighton Fraternal Order of Police, Lodge 48 for the City of Brighton’s Public Safety Tax ballot measure for the November 7th, 2023, election. Passage of this modest .15% sales tax increase will positively impact all citizens and visitors to Brighton by ensuring the Police Department is appropriately staffed to proactively prevent crime and meet the public safety needs of a growing community. Funding generated by this ballot measure would be restricted to use by the Police Department to enhance services and meet community public safety needs. Funding received will be used for Police Officers to address specific, pervasive, public safety issues such as: motor vehicle theft, sexual assault, violent crime, traffic, and others. As the Fraternal Order of Police lodge representing members of the Brighton Police Department, we take our responsibility to ensure the safety of our community seriously and this ballot measure will positively impact our ability to do this. We ask all voters to join us in supporting this measure and making Brighton safer.

Respectfully, State Trustee for the Brighton Police FOP Lodge 48

Brighton Lodge #48

For many years officers of the Brighton Police Department had attempted to start an employee organization to address issues with the administration and foster tradition and fraternalism within the police department.

On June 27, 2002 several Brighton police officers were involved in the shooting of a robbery suspect who had fired at on-duty and off-duty Brighton officers. At the conclusion of the shooting the suspect was wounded and the officers were placed on paid leave during the investigation. The officer shooting was deemed justified, but that was when Detective Mark Kohn realized a large majority of the Brighton officers lacked legal defense.

Within three weeks of the shooting Detective Kohn gained the support of Chief Clint Blackhurst and held a charter meeting for an FOP lodge at Brighton PD. Present at the meeting was Colorado State FOP President JD Cordova, State Trustee Franklin Gale and many Brighton police officers. The Brighton Police FOP Lodge #48 was chartered on July 29, 2002. During the first night one-third of the sworn officers of Brighton PD became founding members of Lodge #48. Over the next year we reached 96% enrollment of sworn officers. As of April 2018 we represent 100% of the Brighton Police Officers.

Over the past several years the Brighton FOP has given to the community in many ways. We have supported schools and sports teams within our city. Each year we provide scholarships to Brighton Police Explorers so these local youth can participate in out-of-state competitions.
