On Saturday, July 2nd Platte Valley Ambulance Service was selected as one of the stops for the National EMS Memorial Service “Rolling Honors”.

The Rolling Honors Ambulance travels across the Country making stops in every state while on its way to the National EMS Memorial near our nation’s capital later this month.

The ambulance carries the names of all of the EMS providers who died in the line of duty that are being inducted into the memorial for the current year. There are 59 names being added to the Tree of Life at the National EMS Memorial in 2023.

Realizing that not everyone can make the trip to the actual memorial, the rolling honors makes it possible for people to participate and pay their respects to the fallen as the honors ambulance makes its way across the country.

We want to extend our gratitude to our colleagues from South Adams County Fire District for partnering with us in order to welcome the rolling honors. Also, to our air medical colleagues from Airlife Denver and from Flight for Life, and to our brothers and sisters from Northglenn Ambulance for participating in this important event with us.

It was a pleasure to meet the Rolling Honors team. We wish them safe travels as they continue to carry out their important mission.

PVAS has two teammates inducted into the National EMS Memorial.
Anthony Archuleta in 2011
Mark Smith in 2022

Their names appear on the Tree of Life at the National EMS Memorial.

Huge thanks to our C-Shift, South Team Battalion Chief Paramedic, Blake Armstrong for taking the lead on teaching our monthly continuing education sessions with our colleagues from South Adams Fire.

This months topic was physiology of blood loss and bleeding control procedures. Blake covered the “Diamond” of hypotension, Hypoxia, Hypothermia and Hypocalcemia, Acid-Base Concepts, ABGs/VBGs and our teams practiced common bleeding control procedures.

Everyone did a great job!

Also, a sincere thank you to our Paramedic Training Captain, Mike Webster for stepping in to help out!

We’re excited to welcome the newest addition to our south team operations - a 2023 Chevy Suburban Advanced Life Support Chase Car! This vehicle will be driven by our south team paramedic Battalion Chief (EMS 23).

It is located at South Adams Fire Station 23, partnered with Engine 23 and Ambulance 23. This vehicle is outfitted with all required Advanced Life Support equipment and supplies and will respond as a support to high acuity and specialty calls throughout the district.

Huge thanks to our colleagues from South Adams County Fire Department Fleet Management for their hard work installing the emergency lights, sirens and radios and to our friends from The Artworks for the high visibility vehicle graphics. Rumor has it that EMS 23 can be seen from outer space!

On February 20, The South Adams Engine 22 Fire Crew and Platte Valley Ambulance Service paramedics Eric Gregory and Dani Bennenberg had an evening unlike most others. The crew was en route to the hospital with a woman in labor when they realized they wouldn't make it in time. They stopped at South Adams Fire Station 22 and delivered a beautiful baby girl in six minutes! Both mom and baby are doing great. ❤️

50 years of Service:

We were created as an ambulance service in May of 1972 by the citizens of Brighton & surrounding communities. While ambulances had been in use in the United States since the civil war era, EMS as a profession had only recently been born.

Early ambulances were Cadillac or Pontiac “hearse” style vehicles- many sported the “Red Cross” to indicate their medical mission. This was a point of contention with the American Red Cross - since most ambulance services had nothing to do with the Red Cross organization. As such, many services changed to an “orange” cross…

Recognizing a need for a symbol or insignia that would represent the EMS profession (Much like the “Maltese cross” for the fire service or the “shield”for law enforcement), Leo Schwartz with the Department of Transportation (the original federal home for EMS) created the “Star of Life” in 1973.

Each point in the star represents an individual phase of an EMS response. The staff & serpent - represent the “staff of Esclepious”. Esclepious, was elevated to “God” status by the Greeks. As a man, he was considered a physician of their time. Widely trusted & respected. While many consider the serpent a symbol of evil, to the Greeks, the serpent represented knowledge & wisdom. A fable exists in which the wise, old serpent sought the advice of the widely respected Esclepious and wound himself up Esclepious’ walking stick in order to speak eye-to-eye with the man and seek his advice. The staff & snake have been used as a symbol of medicine for centuries.

PVAS actually pre-dates the symbol of our profession! Our first department patch, which is represented in our 50th anniversary logo, is a simple circular design - blank in the center. The 2nd generation of the original patch depicts the Star of Life in the center!

Today, you will see the Star of Life on our vehicles, affixed to our stations, and located on the patches & badges of our uniforms.

For 50 years, we have been - and will continue to be honored to serve the people living, working, going to school & traveling through our communities. ❤️

We would like to introduce you to the newest command vehicle in our fleet! “Command 5” is a 2023 Chevy suburban. It will be operated by our South team Paramedic Battalion Chiefs.

Our south team Battalion Chief’s will go into service on January 1. Their vehicle will be outfitted with all of the necessary advanced life support equipment. Similar to the north team BC’s, the south team BC’s will be poised to respond to high acuity calls and as needed when requested by their ambulance crews.

Huge thanks to Angie from Johnson’s auto Plaza for helping us spec out this vehicle. Also, much respect to Dave and his team from the Artworks for their excellent job on our graphics.

Our colleagues at South Adams County fire department, fleet service division will be helping us with the installation of the emergency warning equipment and the radios. We are hopeful to see this new vehicle on the road by mid February!
