Did you know that fishing is available at 343 National Wildlife Refuge's and 35 Wetland Management Districts within the National Wildlife Refuge System? In fact, Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge is one of these fishing sites! 🐟

In order to keep fishing enjoyable for all visitors at the Refuge, please keep a few things in mind when disposing of fish.

🐠 Dead fish that is left on the road near the Refuge (pictured below) can negatively impact the visitor experience at the Refuge, as well as the fishing experience for other visitors.

🐠 Piles of dead fish left on or near the road can also draw migratory birds closer to the road, potentially putting them in harm's way from oncoming traffic.

Please see page 24-25 of the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources Fishing Guidebook for guidance on how to dispose of fish according to state regulations, linked here:https://wildlife.utah.gov/guidebooks/fishing_guidebook.pdf

According to the regulations referenced above, carp must be removed and disposed at one of the following locations:

• In the water where the fish was caught
• A fish-cleaning station
• The angler’s permanent residence
• Another location where disposal is authorized by law

Please do not leave piles of dead fish on the shore or roads of the Refuge. Thank you for helping the Refuge provide a positive experience to all visitors! 🐟

May is American Wetlands Month, a time to celebrate the incredible habitats that support so much life at Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge.

Wetlands are some of the most productive ecosystems on Earth. They provide critical habitat for millions of migratory birds, serve as nurseries for fish and other wildlife, help improve water quality, and reduce flooding by absorbing excess water. Here at the Refuge, wetlands are vital stopover points along the Pacific and Central Flyways offering food, shelter, and space for birds during their long journeys.

From the songs of marsh birds to the sight of waterfowl resting on open water, wetlands are full of life and wonder this time of year. As you explore the Refuge this month, take a moment to appreciate the role wetlands play not only for wildlife, but for everyone.

Happy Mother's Day! From the skies to the wetlands, bird moms at the Refuge show just how far a mother will go to protect and care for her young.

Take the Killdeer, for example. This remarkable bird will pretend to have a broken wing, putting on quite the dramatic show to lure predators away from her nest and keep her eggs safe. Or consider the hummingbird—female hummingbirds do it all on their own, building delicate nests, incubating their eggs, and tirelessly feeding their young.

While these bird moms are truly amazing, today is the perfect day to let your own mom know just how much she means to you.

Celebrate together with a visit to the Refuge. Take a peaceful walk, enjoy the beauty of nature, and maybe even spot some of these dedicated bird moms in action.

🌼 Wildflower Week is May 3-9! 🌼

Spring is in full bloom, and it is the perfect time to celebrate Wildflower Week at the Refuge! As temperatures warm, colorful wildflowers begin to dot the landscape, providing important food for pollinators and adding beauty to the wetlands.

Take a walk along the trails and see how many different blooms you can spot. From bright yellows to soft purples. Be sure to stop by the Refuge's pollinator garden in the Outdoor Nature Explore Classroom area. This special space is designed to support bees, butterflies, and other pollinators, and it is a great place to get a closer look at the plants that help keep local ecosystems healthy. Each flower plays a role in supporting the Refuge’s ecosystem and the wildlife that depend on it.

Be sure to bring your camera, take your time, and enjoy the small details that make this season so special. Wildflower Week is a great reminder of how vibrant and alive the Refuge becomes each spring.

Today, Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge wants to highlight some of the history of Fish Springs National Wildlife Refuge! This wildlife refuge is in a complex with Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge, and it has an amazing history. 🌿

More than just wildlife… this place has stories to tell.

Fish Springs is not just an oasis for birds - it is a piece of American history. The Pony Express once ran right through this area, with multiple stations just miles from Refuge headquarters. Later, the historic Lincoln Highway also crossed this landscape, connecting people across the country long before modern roads existed.

When you sit under the trees of Thomas Ranch you are sitting at one of the only supply stops in the Great Basin during its time. The springs watered the horses and ox teams as well as the people braving the harsh conditions.

When you visit, you are not just stepping into a wildlife refuge - you are stepping into a place that has been part of the American story for generations.
