On March 21st, the Biggsville Volunteer Fire Company members, significant others and special guests gathered at the Briggsville American Legion for its annual firemens appreciation night. We often only get to see each other under battle conditions This night allows us to unwind, share stories and meld as a group.

After dinner often times each year we hand out promotions and awards. While there were no promotions to be given out this year, there were plenty of service pin awards to go around.

Last night with the early season warm temperatures and somewhat low humidity. The members of the Briggsville Voulnteer Fire Company conducted a series of controlled burns. Not only does this give us the opportunity to knock off the cobwebs and train on our wildland Fire tactics, but its a great service to the land owner, as it lessens the fuel load which can help mitigate an actual wildfire, but it also promotes new growth come spring.

With the cold weather that has been draped over the area for the last few weeks, it has allowed the lake to become frozen over. What does that mean for us, well, it brings ice fisherman and snowmobilers to the area. As the weather warms in the late winter and into spring and the ice conditions deteriorate, the chances of having an individual fall thru the ice increases. Last night Briggsville Fire took advantage of the newly formed good ice and practiced ice rescue. This ensures that our crews will be ready should we face the real thing. Remember, there is no such thing as truly safe ice.

Today, Representative Tony Kurtz and I had the honor of presenting nine individuals with the 2025 Hometown Hero Award.

During the 2025 Briggsville Memorial Day Parade, a member of the American Legion Unit 329 Honor Guard suddenly collapsed while carrying the American flag. Marquette County Deputy Sheriff Kelsey Morgan immediately stepped in to provide aid. She was joined by other community members who worked seamlessly to give CPR and the Legion member started breathing on his own and regained consciousness. He was transported via Med Flight to UW Hospital and underwent open-heart surgery and later recovered.

What could have been a tragic loss on Memorial Day, turned into a powerful reminder of the strength and readiness of our community. Thank you to Deputy Sheriff Kelsey Morgan, Brittany Walker, Erin Rogers, Melissa Winter, Mikolaj Amaya, Alejandro Amaya, Dylan Moore, Jerry Moore, and Mitch Fisher for your selfless and brave acts.
