The FEMA Voluntary Agency Liaisons’ Snapshot Report for June has been released!

This latest edition includes numerous stories about FEMA’s non-governmental partners and how they are assisting survivors and communities throughout the United States, Tribal Nations and territories.

An example is the United Cajun Navy, which continues to assist Lake Lure, Chimney Rock and Bat Cave in western North Carolina as they recover from Hurricane Helene. In partnership with Delivering Good, the organization hosted the Rural Communities Resource Giveaway at Lake Lure Classical Academy, providing students and families access to 26 pallets of furnishings, home décor, clothing, and more. The event also equipped local agencies addressing food insecurity, utility support, homelessness, and family services with much-needed supplies. Area nurses received items for their youngest patients, ensuring continued support for the community beyond the event.

Did you know there are different types of tornadoes?

From massive wedges to slender ropes, tornadoes can take on an incredibly wide variety of shapes and sizes depending on atmospheric conditions. While some structures like the cone are highly visible, others such as rain-wrapped tornadoes are heavily obscured and present unique challenges for detection. Understanding these distinct visual characteristics is essential for identifying potential hazards and maintaining situational awareness.

With hotter temperatures in the forecast, it’s important to stay safe and cool. In Maine, heat-related illnesses become more common when temps reach the mid-to-upper 80s and above.

Cooling Centers may be opening across the state to provide relief, especially for those without access to air conditioning.

📍During hot weather check for open Cooling Center locations here: maine.gov/mema/response-recovery/mass-care

You may also dial 211 (or 1-866-811-5695) or text your zip code to 898-211 for a list of Cooling Center locations, or contact your local town office, fire, or police department.

It's hurricane season. Before a serious storm threatens Maine's coast learn your route to get inland, often marked by blue evacuation route signs. These are different than the green interstate detour signs which aren't related! Questions? Ask and we'll answer!

Emergency management involves much more than preparing for natural disasters. It also includes events like the FIFA World Cup! Events like the World Cup are important to prepare for because of the amount of people arriving to the area; the collaboration required between responding agencies such as police, fire, EMS, and hospitals; and the logistical concerns of road closures, detours, and security measures (such as bag checks, metal detectors, and ID/ticket verification).

Take a look at how FEMA and local officials are preparing for the event:
