The County Clerk's Office is seeking the public's assistance with a local history project.
We are researching former County Clerks who served during the Revolutionary War and helped shape the early history of our nation. One of these distinguished individuals is Jonathan Elmer (1745–1817) of Bridgeton. Born in Cedarville, Dr. Elmer served as a physician, county sheriff, county clerk, presiding judge, delegate to the Continental Congress, and later as one of New Jersey's first United States Senators.
As part of our research, we are attempting to locate a portrait, image, sketch, silhouette, or any likeness of Jonathan Elmer. Despite extensive research, we have not yet identified an authenticated image.
If you have knowledge of a portrait, family photograph of a painting, historical document containing his likeness, or information about where such an image may be found, we would greatly appreciate hearing from you.
Please contact the County Clerk's Office with any information that may assist us in preserving and sharing the history of this important New Jersey statesman and public servant.
