Today marks the 25th Anniversary of one of the largest and costliest fires in Montgomery County History.
May 15th, 2001 started out as any normal Tuesday May Election Day would for the people of Bridgeport, Pa. It was a clear spring day, but quite windy. That all would change soon after lunch time. Starting shortly after 1:00 PM, calls started coming in for a building fire at the Continental Business Park in Bridgeport. The business park was inside an old 100 year old mill complex that was situated between the river and railroad tracks. Members of Swedesburg would soon respond to assist the Bridgeport Fire Department. Due to the wind that day, the fire spread through the complex very quickly and grew to multiple alarms. Smoke could be seen for miles. Companies from surrounding counties would be called to help fully extinguish the fire. The fire would take over a day to be placed under control and over a week to be fully extinguished. In all, 35 businesses would be considered total losses. As many as 900 employees would be affected by the fire.
Firefighter Guziewicz remembers being there that day;
“I remember one point being grabbed by my coat and told to run! One of the buildings started collapsing around us. We had to leave equipment behind. They barely got our truck and Ladder 48 out in time. I was also treated later that night for smoke inhalation at the hospital.”
Assistant Chief Curll remembers that day too, just slightly differently;
“I was only in the first grade. My classroom at Bridgeport Elementary faced out overlooking town towards the river. I just remember one point we looked up and everything was black from all the smoke.”
The fire would be determined to be accidentally caused by an electrical fault after a lengthy investigation. Another large fire happened in 2011 at the remaining part of the complex when a wax company suffered a devastating fire. This would be the first large scale fire for Sq**rt 56. Today the River Pointe Development sits on the site of the complex.
