The Center for Animal Research and Education (CARE) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to the loving and long-term care of over 60 animals including mountain lions, tigers, leopards, bobcats, ring-tail lemurs, serval, lynx, lions, llamas, and a tortoise. Some of the animals were abused, abandoned, or kept as exotic pets before they came to the facility. Others were retired from the e

ntertainment industry, retired from zoos, or transferred from other facilities that closed or reached capacity. Regardless of an animal’s origins, they are all given tremendous love and world class husbandry when they find a home here. We continue to evolve in order to best serve our mission of providing a safe, permanent, and loving home to exotic animals in need. We focus on excellence in physical and emotional care, advocating animal welfare through education, and conducting minimally-invasive research with the aims of improving living conditions for captive animal populations world-wide.

This summer hit CARE hard.

Over the course of just a few months, we faced nearly $50,000 in unexpected expenses.

Our walk-in freezer failed, and we lost 10,000 pounds of reserve food for the animals. All three of our water wells went down at the same time. Three air-conditioning systems failed during record Texas heat. A critical mower needed an $8,000 engine replacement. We dealt with plumbing failures, broken equipment, unexpected veterinary expenses, and more.

Normally, emergencies like these happen one at a time. This summer, they just kept coming.

Through every one of them, our priority remained the same: the animals.

They never missed a meal. They never went without clean water or needed medication. Their habitats remained clean, safe, and comfortable. We did what we have always promised to do: give the animals who call CARE home the very best care we possibly can.

But doing that came at a cost.

These expenses have depleted our operating funds and forced us to dig deeply into our emergency reserves. Right now, another major repair or emergency veterinary expense could put CARE in a very difficult position.

So we're asking for your help.

❤️ Our goal is to raise $25,000 through the CARE Summer '26 Relief Fund.

If CARE and the animals who live here mean something to you, please consider making a donation. No amount is too small. Every gift helps us rebuild the financial cushion we need to keep caring for our animals and weather the next unexpected emergency.

And if donating isn't possible right now, you can still make a difference. Please share this post and video. Tell your friends why CARE matters to you. Reaching someone new could be just as valuable.

Watch the video to hear Derek explain what happened, where things stand today, and what we're doing to get CARE back on solid footing.

And because we could all use a little fun after this summer, we're throwing in some pretty great animal enrichment challenges as we work toward that $25,000 goal. 🐯❤️

Uh oh, Buggy got stuck in a box!

Fire has really been enjoying her new enclosure and she’s been exploring which led her into a spot she didn’t know how to get out of! New things can be scary, especially when you don’t see so great.

Derek did his best to give her encouragement, but all she needed was a little time to figure it out on her own.

Time to get Bug a step stool. 🪜
