Norristown has always been a place of immigration and emigration.

The town is named for Isaac Norris, a member of the colonial Pennsylvania legislature who ordered the casting of the Liberty Bell. With the introduction of Europeans to North America, the Swedish and Dutch fur traders traveled the Schuylkill during their trading missions. During the British colonial period came the English, followed by the Germans who established a small settlement. During the American Revolution, Norristown saw hostilities during the British occupation of Philadelphia when the town and its iron works were burned to the ground. During the Abolitionist Movement Norristown was also an important stop on the Underground Railroad. Norristown was one of the largest communities under Pennsylvania's borough form of government. Norristown was established as a mill town. It was a retail center for the rural areas outside of Philadelphia.

Norristown Recreation is hosting once-a-month basketball clinics at the Rec Center from October to January. One Saturday each month will be open to those wanting to hone their skills on the court. Each session is $15 per participant, open to those 10-18 years old with registration on the recreation website: https://norristownrec.recdesk.com/Community/Program?category=3

Norristown Recreation organizará clínicas de baloncesto una vez al mes en el Centro de Recreación desde octubre hasta enero. Happy Birthday to the late Josh Culbreath on what would have been his 94th birthday. Culbreath was a veteran, coach and athlete who won the bronze medal at the 1956 Olympics in the 400m hurdles. He is the first Norristonian to win an Olympic medal. Last year, Coolidge Boulevard was honorarily dedicated as Josh Culbreath Boulevard at his alma mater (Eisenhower) where his track career started. Culbreath passed away in 2021 aged 88.

Culbreath fue veterano, entrenador y atleta, y ganó la medalla de bronce en los Juegos Olímpicos de 1956 en los 400 metros con vallas. Happy 94th Birthday to Joseph Cicippio, a businessman born and educated in Norristown who was held hostage in Lebanon for five years. On Sept. 12, 1986 Cicippio was kidnapped by extremists on his way to work at American University in Beirut. He was released by his captors in late 1991 after 1,908 days. After that, he continued to work in the D.C. area by building up his own tech company.

As it is, businesses may not obstruct more than 25 percent of window areas with signage (mounted, affixed or painted, temporary or permanent). This informational session will be hosted at Municipal Hall, Sept. 17 at 5:30 p.m.
