Norristown has always been a place of immigration and emigration.

The town is named for Isaac Norris, a member of the colonial Pennsylvania legislature who ordered the casting of the Liberty Bell. With the introduction of Europeans to North America, the Swedish and Dutch fur traders traveled the Schuylkill during their trading missions. During the British colonial period came the English, followed by the Germans who established a small settlement. During the Ame

rican Revolution, Norristown saw hostilities during the British occupation of Philadelphia when the town and its iron works were burned to the ground. During the Abolitionist Movement Norristown was also an important stop on the Underground Railroad. Norristown was one of the largest communities under Pennsylvania's borough form of government. Norristown was established as a mill town. It was a retail center for the rural areas outside of Philadelphia.

Did you know, the Norristown Gazette, precursor to the Times Herald, first printed on June 15, 1799? This issue included the establishment of the publication schedule, the cost of subscription ($1 a year!) and months-old reports on foreign conflicts along the Danube and Rhine rivers.

Happy Birthday to the late actor Richard Derr (b.1917). The star of stage and screen was born and raised in Norristown, cutting his teeth in local theater. Derr led the Oscar-winning “When Worlds Collide”, worked with Hitchcock and featured in the original “Star Trek” series. Derr died in 1992 aged 74.

Feliz cumpleaños al fallecido actor Richard Derr (n. 1917). La estrella de teatro y cine nació y creció en Norristown, dando sus primeros pasos en el teatro local. Derr protagonizó la película ganadora del Oscar When Worlds Collide, trabajó con Alfred Hitchcock y apareció en la serie original de Star Trek. Falleció en 1992 a la edad de 74 años.

The department’s team is one of five certified teams in the county. Thank you for your preparedness to keep Norristown residents safe, no matter the element.
