On this day 249 years ago, the Second Continental Congress adopted the flag of the United States by resolution. The resolution stated, “That the flag of the thirteen United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation.”

Today, the American flag remains a powerful symbol of our nation’s history, freedom and the sacrifices made by generations of Americans to protect those ideals. We proudly fly the flag as a reminder of the unity, courage, and enduring spirit that continue to define our country and inspire us to serve our communities and one another.
