We are monitoring a period of active weather that will result in elevated to critical fire concerns. There remains some uncertainty in the exact timing and coverage of thunderstorms, but the current forecast suggests isolated thunderstorms over the Cascades late Friday night becoming scattered across the Inland Northwest on Saturday. Saturday afternoon into the early evening will also bring a period of dry and gusty winds. Do your part to prevent sparks.

On this day, eleven years ago, firefighters Richard Wheeler, Andrew Zajac, and Tom Zbyszewski were conducting initial attack on the Twisp River Fire on the Methow Valley Ranger District when they were overrun by the fire and lost their lives. A fourth crew member, Daniel Lyon, Jr., survived and endured life-changing injuries.

As we navigate another demanding fire season, this anniversary reminds us of the risks our firefighters face and the deep commitment they bring to protecting our communities. We are profoundly grateful for their courage, skill, and dedication.

We continue to honor the memory of these firefighters and the legacy they left behind. Our thoughts are with the survivors, families, friends, and coworkers whose lives were forever changed.

Want to make a real impact in Mansfield? 🚑
Douglas County Fire District #5 is recruiting volunteer EMTs, and we need people who care about their community and want to be there when it matters most.

A hybrid EMT class starts September 14th at Station 244 (DCFD #4) near Beebe Bridge. This is a great opportunity to gain valuable skills, serve your neighbors, and strengthen emergency medical services across our district.

Interested? Email [email protected] to get started. Your willingness to help could save a life.
