Feeling extra proud of our favorite local communi-tree preserve!

This morning, Bracken Preserve was formally inducted into the Old-Growth Forest Community Forest Network. Bracken is one of only two locations to be recognized as a Community Forest in the state of North Carolina.

Forests recognized by OGFN are focal points in their community, accessible greenspaces where people can gather and recreate. The Network’s goal is to ensure the preservation and recognition of at least one forest in every forested county in the United States, creating a roadmap of family-friendly hikes that showcase the beauty and diversity of the nation's oldest forests.

Members of Pisgah Area SORBA and Conserving Carolina, who have been instrumental in the management, improvement, and protection of the Preserve, joined City representatives for a private dedication event that celebrated the history and ecology of Bracken before hiking the new Mac Morrow Trail.

This designation coincides with neighboring Gorges State Park joining the Network as a recognized old-growth forest: a truly tree-mendous day for Transylvania County forests!

As we commemorate the 25th anniversary of September 11th and remember those who lost their lives that day and in the days that followed, we invite you to visit the Brevard Fire Department's memorial for a moment of reflection.

The l-beam from the World Trade Center housed on the department's exterior wall on West Main Street serves as a tribute to the selfless acts of heroism performed by members of FDNY-343, NYPD-23, and PAPD-37 and honors the bravery, solidarity, and hope shown in the face of unthinkable tragedy.

"Public trust is something we have to earn, and listening is a big part of that."

During a series of Public Safety Committee meetings this summer, the Brevard Police Department NC introduced a proposal to install three Axon-brand Automatic License Plate Reader (ALPR) cameras within city limits. After considering feedback from community members via public comments, phone calls, and emails, BPD Chief Wentzell voluntarily withdrew the proposal at the start of Council’s September 8 meeting.

We depend on *your* engagement and input to ensure local decision-making reflects our community's needs and values. Thank you to everyone who made their voices heard during this process!

Never been so excited to fill out some paperwork—Fairhaven Meadows has now begun the pre-leasing process!

Located at 1505 Asheville Highway, Fairhaven Meadows consists of 42 apartment units for folks making 70% or less of the area median income. Rent is based on a set percentage of each household’s income to ensure these units remain affordable, and the management company expects to open the first building to residents early this fall!

Folks interested in leasing one of the complex’s one-, two-, or three-bedroom units should contact the management company by calling (704) 802-9992 or emailing [email protected]

Thou still unemptied bin of quietness,
Thou lonely can of Silence and Delay,
Forsaken receptacle, where canst thou witness
All the changes arranged for the holiday:
What half-gnaw’d remnants tumble from thy shape
Of snacks or meals, or of both,
Within the churn of comingling debris?
When, then, will routes resume to stem the growth?
When will trucks alter the dotted streetscape?
Wednesday instead, as the website decreed.

As always, the full (prose) holiday sanitation schedule is available on our website: https://www.cityofbrevard.com/m/newsflash/Home/Detail/967
