Today, Sheriff Chuck Owenby and the Transylvania County Sheriff's Office remembers the tragic events of 9/11/2001. Let us reflect on that horrific day 25 years ago, and honor all those who lost perished on September 11, 2001. The best way we can honor them is to implement the lessons learned that day and pass them on to future generations. As we look back on those days, now 25 years past, what are those lessons?

First, we must never forget that evil exists. We cannot pretend or become so naive as to believe that there aren’t bad actors in the world who wish to destroy us and our way of life. Remembering this is crucial so that we remain vigilant, prepared, and ready to defend ourselves. We must teach our children and future generations so they do not forget as well.

Second, we must support our U.S. military personnel and first responders, the guardians who protect us from such evil. We must honor those who put their lives on the line for the rest of us. Serve, encourage others to serve, and support those who do - our military, law enforcement, firefighters, and paramedics.

Third, we must find the common ground that unites us. As Americans, we might disagree on certain political topics, religious issues, or social issues. But we must recognize that we are stronger together. Remembering that there are those who seek to destroy us and our children should help us to work together.

Scam Warning

The Transylvania County Sheriff's Office has been made aware of a fraudulent message circulating by email, text, and social media claiming to be from Transylvania County Schools or a school employee regarding an "Estate Sale" for a staff member who allegedly lost her husband and is selling vehicles, equipment, tools, and other items at deeply discounted prices.
This is a SCAM.
The message falsely uses the Transylvania County Schools name and logo in an attempt to appear legitimate. The purpose is to convince victims to contact the scammer and send money or deposits for items that do not exist.

❌ Do not click on links or respond to the message.
⚠️ Be cautious of deals that seem too good to be true—they usually are.

If you have already provided personal information or sent money, contact your financial institution immediately and report the incident to your local law enforcement agency.

Speeding Slows You Down NC Governor's Highway Safety Program Campaign

The Transylvania County Sheriff's Office is partnering with the North Carolina Governor's Highway Safety Program during the Speeding Slows You Down campaign.
Our beautiful mountain roads are shared by families, neighbors, visitors, cyclists, and pedestrians. Choosing to slow down helps protect everyone who travels them.
Speed limits are in place to give drivers more time to react, reduce the severity of crashes, and help ensure everyone gets home safely. Whether you're commuting to work, heading out for an adventure, or simply driving across town, taking a few extra minutes can make all the difference.
Throughout this campaign, you may notice an increased law enforcement presence on our roadways. These efforts are focused on encouraging safe driving habits and raising awareness about the importance of obeying posted speed limits.
We encourage everyone to:Slow down and obey posted speed limits.Stay alert and avoid distractions.Always wear your seat belt.Be courteous and patient with other drivers.
Thank you for helping us keep Transylvania County a safe place to live, work, and visit. Together, we can make our roads safer for everyone.

SCAM AWARENESS

The Transylvania County Sheriff's Office is asking our community to remain vigilant as we continue to receive a high volume of scam reports and attempted scams.
We are receiving multiple reports from local stores that elderly customers are purchasing hundreds of dollars in Apple Gift Cards, iTunes Gift Cards, and Green Dot prepaid cards. In many cases, store employees recognize that something isn't right, but they are often unable to question the customer or stop the purchase.
Please remember:No legitimate business, government agency, law enforcement agency, utility company, bank, or technology company will ever require you to pay with gift cards or prepaid cards. If someone is demanding payment this way, it is a scam.
Scammers are becoming increasingly convincing. They often claim:• A loved one has been arrested or is in trouble.• Your computer has been hacked.• You owe taxes or missed jury duty.• Your bank account has been compromised.• Your Social Security or other government benefits are at risk.
Their goal is to create panic and convince victims to act before verifying the story.
We encourage everyone to check in with elderly family members, friends, neighbors, and loved ones. A simple conversation about these scams could prevent someone from losing thousands of dollars. Let's all look out for one another.

Please come out and give for this worthy cause.
