Today, we’re highlighting a department dedicated to upholding justice and protecting our community — the District Attorney’s Office.

Led by District Attorney Derek Estep, this office represents the citizens of Washington County and the State of Texas in the District Courts, primarily prosecuting felony criminal cases. Working closely with law enforcement, victims, and the courts, the District Attorney’s Office plays a vital role in ensuring justice is served and public safety is maintained.

The District Attorney’s Office consists of four additional prosecutors and six support staff, all working together to serve the community with professionalism and integrity.

What does the District Attorney’s Office do?
The District Attorney’s Office is responsible for:

✔️ Prosecuting felony criminal cases in District Court
✔️ Presenting cases to the Grand Jury
✔️ Working with law enforcement in the investigation and preparation of criminal cases
✔️ Supporting and advocating for victims throughout the legal process
✔️ Negotiating plea agreements and representing the State at trial
✔️ Ensuring cases are handled fairly, ethically, and in accordance with the law
✔️ Collaborating with community partners to enhance public safety

While much of their work takes place in the courtroom, their impact is felt throughout the community by promoting accountability, protecting victims, and preserving the rule of law.

Stay tuned as we continue highlighting the departments and people who keep Washington County running!

Happy San Jacinto Day! On this day in 1836, Texas forces won the battle of San Jacinto, the concluding military event of the Texas Revolution. Facing General Santa Anna's Mexican army of some 1,200 men encamped in what is now southeastern Harris County, General Sam Houston disposed his forces in battle order about 3:30 p.m., during siesta time. The Texans' movements were screened by trees and the rising ground, and evidently Santa Anna had no lookouts posted. The Texan line sprang forward on the run with the cries "Remember the Alamo!" and "Remember Goliad!" The battle lasted but eighteen minutes. According to Houston's official report, the casualties were 630 Mexicans killed and 730 taken prisoner. Against this, only nine of the 910 Texans were killed or mortally wounded and thirty were wounded less seriously.

Scotty's House is such an asset to the counties served. Without their resources and expertise, prosecuting child abuse cases would be even more difficult. We were proud to be a part of the ceremony and see so many local schools, churches, and community organizations present to support the children of Washington County.

We ended this week in Brenham with community leaders, partners, and advocates to recognize the 90 children in our community who have been served by Scotty’s House from Washington County at our annual Child Abuse Awareness & Prevention Month Ceremony. Each name shared during this ceremony represents a child, a story, and a path toward healing.

In 2025, Scotty’s House served 1,019 children across the Brazos Valley, which is made possible through the support of our partners and the strength of the communities we serve.

Together, we remain committed to protecting children, supporting families, and bringing hope to those who need it most. Join us throughout April as we continue to raise awareness!

💙Scotty’s House: Brazos Valley’s Child Advocacy Center provides compassionate forensic interviews, medical exams, counseling, family advocacy & community education to ensure safety, healing & justice for children victimized by abuse.

Scams like the ones Det. Morong and Ryon talked about today are becoming more and more common. They are going to continue to build on this presentation and hope to be back at the Senior Center soon to continue to spread the word. The best protection against targeted fraud is recognition and prevention.

Thanks to Brenham Police Department and Detective Morong for helping put this together.
