Kitsap County Dept of Emergency Management

Kitsap County Dept of Emergency Management Our mission: to prepare for, respond to, and recover from disasters that affect Kitsap County and its cities.

Kitsap County is home to approximately 274,000 residents and is located between Hood Canal and the Puget Sound areas. The County occupies lowlands in the shadow of the Olympic Mountains. The peninsula is deeply dissected by inlets giving the County roughly 210 miles of salt water coastline. Kitsap County has the longest coastline of any County in the continental limits of the Untied States. With over 636 inhabitants per square mile, Kitsap County is the third most densely populated area in the State. Kitsap County has a land mass of 395 miles and has 33 miles of fresh water waterfront. Kitsap County Department of Emergency Management (KCDEM) is responsible for providing the emergency and disaster needs of the greater Kitsap County area including the cities of Bremerton, Poulsbo, and Port Orchard, and also supports the emergency management program of the City of Bainbridge Island. KCDEM develops and maintains the Kitsap County Comprehensive Emergency Management Plans (KC-CEMP) as a blueprint for response to a variety of emergency scenarios. 🌊 Do you know what you'll do? 🌊

Living near the water means knowing the risks. Stop by Ready Bremerton 2026 to learn about tsunamis β€” what causes them, how to recognize the warning signs, and what steps to take to keep your family safe. The Seattle Fault runs through the middle of Kitsap and a strong quake on that fault will trigger a tsunami.

Yesterday was a landmark day for Kitsap County as we prepare for disasters large and small. KCDEM hosted the first semi-annual workshop with representatives from local agencies and jurisdictions. Together they identified and prioritized joint trainings and exercises over the next three years. This collaboration will increase our skills and, most importantly, save lives in a time of crisis.

An earthquake can happen at any time, including the middle of the night!

This month's tip is to place supplies under or right next to your bed. You'll prevent injury from broken glass and aftershocks and it's likely that your home will be without power.

Start with these essentials:
β€’ Sturdy shoes
β€’ Work gloves
β€’ A bike helmet or hard hat
β€’ A flashlight or headlamp

Additionally, make sure you can easily access a Go-Bag with other supplies like water, an AM/FM radio, first-aid supplies, food and warm clothes in case you can't stay in your home.
