Here's the latest from our friend Jim Nickel:

Pelican Lakes Walleye Stocking Plan

In Mid-April walleyes journey up the Pine River to spawn. It is at that time that the DNR Fisheries Division obtains walleye eggs to be brought to the Brainerd Fisheries Hatchery. The hatched walleye fry stocking for Pelican Lake, totaling close to 35 pounds (approximately 3,900,000 walleye fry), is planned for early May each year. Over the last two years, Pelican Lake received half of the planned stocking. The intent was to see if a smaller stocking would increase the survival rate. The results were negative.
In late April this year, PLA will be stocking 10,000 walleye yearlings. This will be followed up by the DNR stocking 2,000,000 walleye fry in early May, and later in May, stocking another close to 2,000,000 walleye fry OTC marked from Cutfoot Sioux and hatched at the Glenwood Hatchery. The reason for this adjustment is to find something new that may work with warmer waters later in May and increase zooplankton for walleye fry to feed on for survival.

Here's a Fisheries Update from our friend Jim Nickel

FISHERIES.. 2026. Pelican Lake has a DNR fisheries stocking plan. Each May, 3,900,000 walleye fry are stocked in our lake. This past year, DNR fisheries stocked 2,000,000 walleye fry. The DNR believed that stocking fewer walleye fry would result in a higher survival rate. The fall electrofishing testing showed that this plan was unsuccessful. Based on this minimal walleye fry survival, 2,531 lbs. of walleye fingerlings were stocked in October, which is about 71,500 fingerlings. The goal of stocking 600 lbs. of yearling walleye matching biogenetic markers is planned for this spring to supplement the DNR’s stocking. We have taken an aggressive step to increase dissolved oxygen levels in Little Pelican, Stewart Bay, Mousseau Bay, and Cree Bay by opening weedy boat channels to allow more free-flowing water, benefiting our shorelines. This strategy should help raise oxygen levels closer to our shores and should improve baitfish creation and survival.
