Wilkin County proclaims April as Child Abuse Prevention Month
WILKIN COUNTY, Minn. — The Wilkin County Board of Commissioners proclaimed April 2026 as National Child Abuse Prevention Month at the Board of Commissioners meeting on April 7th. The proclamation urges residents, businesses, faith communities, and organizations throughout the county to come together in support of the well being of children and families.
Child abuse and neglect impact every corner of the community. Effective prevention happens when families, schools, health care providers, law enforcement, and community members all work together. The county’s proclamation emphasizes that protecting children is a shared responsibility—one that requires commitment, awareness, and action from everyone.
Commissioner Eric Klindt (District 1) expressed his appreciation for the Health and Human Services staff who attended the board meeting and for the vital work they do to support families, protect children, and promote prevention and well-being. “Thank you,” he said. “The work you do is not easy. We appreciate everything you do in our communities to keep kids safe.”
Throughout April, pinwheels, the national symbol of child abuse prevention, will be displayed at the Wilkin County Courthouse. The pinwheel represents the bright future all children deserve.
On April 10, Wear Blue Day, and throughout April, community members are asked to wear blue to show their support for child abuse prevention. Wearing blue is a simple and visible way to raise awareness and shows that Wilkin County stands for the safety and well-being of every child.
Deb Sjostrom, interim director of Wilkin County Health and Human Services, emphasized that when communities support families before a crisis occurs, children stay safer and families grow stronger. She encouraged everyone to participate this month—wear blue on April 10 and throughout April, watch for the pinwheels, and consider the ways you can make a positive difference in a child and their family’s life.
