Center for Solace, formerly Brattleboro Area Hospice

Center for Solace, formerly Brattleboro Area Hospice We offer services and support free of charge for serious illness, hospice, and grief while engaging our community in conversations about mortality and life.

Brattleboro Area Hospice addresses the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of dying neighbors and their families, those experiencing a loss, and those managing life with a serious illness. We provide non-medical assistance to the terminally ill and their loved ones, bereavement services to Hospice families and the general public, and serve as a community resource on the issues of death, dying

, and grieving. We are an independent, community-based, non-profit volunteer organization that provides grassroots, volunteer-staffed programs to supplement and provide alternatives to the professional services utilized by dying and grieving community members. Our services are free to anyone living in Southeastern Vermont or bordering New Hampshire towns. A physician, home health care provider, nursing home, or family member can refer to our programs. Please visit our website for more information.

Ours is not the task of fixing the entire world all at once, but of stretching out to mend the part of the world that is within our reach. Any small, calm thing that one soul can do to help another soul, to assist some portion of this poor suffering world, will help immensely. It is not given to us to know which acts or by whom, will cause the critical mass to tip toward an enduring good.

What is needed for dramatic change is an accumulation of acts, adding, adding to, adding more, continuing. We know that it does not take everyone on earth to bring justice and peace, but only a small, determined group who will not give up during the first, second, or hundredth gale.

One of the most calming and powerful actions you can do to intervene in a stormy world is to stand up and show your soul. Soul on deck shines like gold in dark times. The light of the soul throws sparks, can send up flares, builds signal fires, causes proper matters to catch fire. To display the lantern of soul in shadowy times like these - to be fierce and to show mercy toward others; both are acts of immense bravery and greatest necessity.

Struggling souls catch light from other souls who are fully lit and willing to show it. If you would help to calm the tumult, this is one of the strongest things you can do.

In this talk from End Well 2025, licensed funeral director and embalmer Joél Simone reflects on how culture, ritual, and ancestral wisdom shape the way communities care for the dying and the dead.

Drawing from her Gullah Geechee heritage and her experience in funeral service, she invites us to reconsider what compassionate end-of-life care can look like when it honors tradition, community, and the cultural knowledge that has helped people navigate loss for generations.

Joél explores the role of intuition, remembrance, and cultural practices in grief—and what is lost when end-of-life care becomes disconnected from those roots.

As she says, “culture is the medicine for grief.”

In this talk from End Well 2025, licensed funeral director and embalmer Joél Simone shares how her Gullah Geechee heritage shapes a different understanding o...
