This week, we recognize EMS Week 2026 and our partners who help care for our community every day.

This year’s theme, “Improving Outcomes, Together,” reflects what EMS is truly about - teamwork, compassion, and service. Serving our community is a privilege we never take lightly.

We wish our fellow EMS community members at Professional Firefighters of Keene IAFF Local 3265, Cheshire County EMS, Golden Cross Ambulance, Rescue Inc., and beyond a safe and Happy EMS Week!

Our Town. Our People. Our Responsibility.

The Town of Brattleboro is lifting the burn ban, effective immediately, due to recent improvements in weather conditions and future forecasts.

This decision follows a period of heightened fire risk due to dry conditions. With the recent reduction in fire danger levels, residents may now resume open burning activities in accordance with local regulations.

➡️ We remind all residents to continue exercising caution and follow these safety guidelines:
• Never leave a fire unattended.
• Only natural wood material may be used.
• Keep water or fire suppression tools nearby.
• Ensure the fire is completely extinguished before leaving the area.
• Apply for a burn permit at https://brattleboro.gov/burn-permits

The Brattleboro Fire Department will continue to monitor conditions and provide updates as needed. We appreciate the community’s cooperation during the burn ban and thank you for helping keep Brattleboro safe.

This week, the decorative overhead lights across Main Street in downtown Brattleboro are illuminated in red as a visible and deliberate tribute to fallen firefighters and the fire service nationwide.

This year, the Brattleboro Fire Department has dedicated the red lighting in honor of Lieutenant Aaron “Coop” Cooper of the Keene Fire Department, who died from cancer attributed to his time in the fire service. His death serves as a powerful reminder of the long-term health risks faced by firefighters and the sacrifices made not only in moments of emergency, but over the course of a career.

Red is widely recognized as the color of the fire service and is used across the country to honor firefighters who have lost their lives in the line of duty. By lighting Main Street red, the Town of Brattleboro and the Brattleboro Fire Department join communities nationwide in remembering those who have fallen and standing in solidarity with their families and fellow firefighters.

This tribute is intended both to honor Lieutenant Cooper’s service and to acknowledge the dedication, courage, and risks firefighters continue to accept while serving their communities. We appreciate the community’s understanding and support as we take this time to recognize the sacrifice behind the uniform.

Every year, the NFFF sponsors the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend, the official tribute to all firefighters who died in the line of duty.

⚠️ The burn ban is back in effect ⚠️

Due to current weather conditions and an elevated risk of wildfires, a burn ban is now in effect for the Town of Brattleboro until further notice.

Relative humidity is expected to remain low, and we have not received any substantial rainfall in several days. In addition, forecasted conditions indicate increased wind and the potential for higher gusts tomorrow, which significantly increases the risk of fire spread. These factors combined create a high wildfire risk, where even a small spark could ignite a fast-moving and dangerous fire.

➡️ Effective immediately, all outdoor burning is prohibited, including:
• Brush piles
• Campfires
• Burn barrels

➡️ Cooking fires: Cooking fires are permitted only when contained in a protected container measuring less than 36 inches in diameter. Cooking fires must be continuously attended while in use. After the fire is extinguished, it needs to be fully wet down immediately to ensure it is completely out. This precautionary measure is necessary to protect our community, natural resources, and emergency responders.

We appreciate the public’s cooperation in keeping Brattleboro safe. If you see smoke, fire, or signs of an uncontrolled burn, call 911 immediately.
