Nanticoke Gardens doesn’t discriminate when it comes to the plants it sells.

Looking for geraniums? The store has them. Petunias? Check. And since May 2022, this Endicott, New York-based garden center is also growing more than two dozen different cannabis cultivars.

One of the state’s first licensed cultivators, Nanticoke Gardens weathered shifting regulations, unexpected costs and customer questions in order to create a year-round revenue stream for the 53-year-old garden center.

Seventeen U.S. senators on July 16 reintroduced the Cannabis Administration and Opportunity Act (CAOA), legislation to end the federal prohibition of cannabis by delisting it from the Controlled Substances Act. The bill, first introduced in 2021 and again in 2024, is a comprehensive effort to decriminalize, regulate, and tax cannabis.

The Cannabis Administration and Opportunity Act would deschedule cannabis, removing it from the Controlled Substances Act.

With six months left in this Congress, a quartet of bipartisan U.S. senators revived popular legislation that would provide federally regulated financial institutions the assurances they need to serve the cannabis industry.

Vermont Republican Gov. Phil Scott approved legislation to reform the state’s adult-use cannabis laws, including increasing purchase and possession limits, reducing licensing fees and allowing cannabis events.

Under a new administrative law judge hearing process that’s scheduled to begin June 29 – for the DEA to determine the merits of a proposed rule to reclassify cannabis as a Schedule III drug under the Controlled Substances Act (CSA) – President Donald Trump’s administration will only entertain testimony from those who oppose the proposed rule.

Derek C. Julius will be the DEA’s chief administrative law judge to oversee the hearing of a proposed rule to reclassify cannabis as a Schedule III drug.
