Getting kids out the door and into the classroom every day can be a challenge! Establishing consistency early on is the secret to building a habit of regular school attendance. Try these ideas to set your child up for a successful year:

⏰ **Stick to a routine:** Set a regular bedtime and morning routine so your child gets enough sleep and knows exactly what to expect every day.
🎒 **Prep the night before:** Lay out clothes and pack backpacks in the evening to eliminate the stressful morning scramble.
🤒 Know when to stay home: Don’t let your child stay home unless they are truly sick. Keep in mind that sudden complaints of a stomach ache or headache can often be a sign of anxiety and not necessarily a physical reason to stay home.
💬 Address anxiety together: If your child seems anxious about going to school, talk to teachers, school counselors, or other parents. They can offer great advice on how to make your child feel comfortable and excited about learning!

Did you know "truancy" and "chronic absence" aren't the same thing? 🤔

While people often use the words interchangeably, understanding the difference is key to helping our students succeed!

🛑 Truancy focuses only on unexcused absences. It emphasizes compliance with school rules and often relies on punitive, legal, or administrative solutions.
🏫 Chronic Absence looks at the bigger picture—counting all missed days, including excused absences, unexcused absences, and suspensions. It focuses on the academic impact of lost learning time and uses positive, community-based strategies to address the root causes of why kids miss school.

Instead of just punishing absences, we need to support students and families to overcome barriers like health issues or lack of transportation. 💙 Together, we can keep kids in schools!

🙋‍♀️Happy first day of school!🍎

Analysis of chronic absence data demonstrates that a low level of student participation in the first weeks of school predicts later absenteeism.

• Students who missed fewer than 2 days in September, continued to average fewer than 2 days absent each month, and over the year were absent an average of 10 days • Between 2 and 4 days, missed 2 to 3 days each month, totaling 25 days for the year
• More than 4 days, missed an average of 6 to 9 days each month, leading to a total of 70 days on average for the year.

This year, let's do our best to have our students show up, be awesome and repeat!

Currently, the urgent need we are focusing on is chronic absenteeism — missing 10 percent or more of school days due to absence for any reason—excused, unexcused absences and suspensions.

Measuring attendance, noticing which students are facing difficulties in showing up for learning, and investing in resources to remove barriers to attendance is more essential than ever. When implemented, these policies can support educators, schools and districts that are struggling to address the ongoing student absenteeism challenge.
