Our thoughts and prayers are with Waylon's family and Highland Home Fire Dept.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of one of our own, Captain Waylon Commander. Waylon was dedicated to serving and spent the last three decades as a member. He served as a Board Member, Captain, and Secretary. Above all he was our friend and we will dearly miss him! Please remember and pray for comfort for his family, and our department family during this difficult time.

If you know me you know that I normally don't do this. However, I think that the Citizens of Crenshaw County should be aware of this. The voters of this county voted in a 1cent sales tax to help support the county Fire & Rescue among other things I believe in or about 2004. In 2015 a 1/2 cent tax was passed by the Citizens of Crenshaw County with the intent of 100% of this going to help support County Fire & Rescue. For this we all collectively Thank You. This in no way covers even half of the cost to respond to the needs of the community with dependable equipment and supplies needed to meet your needs. Crenshaw County is a poor County with close to half of our citizens not being able to cover the cost for Fire Suppression or medical transport. This tax money is very much needed to continue to respond to emergencies. As you can see from the above attachments one the Crenshaw County Commissioners has a Master Plan to redistribute that tax money to include Crenshaw Community Hospital. I understand that the hospital is in need of money. I also understand that a local hospital is a very valuable asset to the county and I'm not opposed to an additional tax for the hospital if that is needed. In 2020 the voters of Crenshaw County rejected an additional Property tax to help the hospital. Maybe the solution is for the Commissioners to once again ask the Citizens to approve an additional tax for the hospital not to take money away from First Responders that you the Citizens have approved for us. Maybe they think you would never approve this or maybe they think they would be voted out of office.

Please keep his family and Luverne Fire Department in your prayers

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Luverne Fire Department’s Assistant Chief and past President of the Crenshaw County Association of Volunteer Fire Departments (CCAVFD), William A. Neal. W.A. has served the fire service in Luverne and Crenshaw County for 50 years. He served many years as the President of the CCAVFD, where he led numerous initiatives to improve the fire service in the county. W.A. also served the Luverne Fire Department, where he was highly dedicated. Not only was W.A. a dedicated firefighter he also served as a State Trooper and Luverne Police officer. Luverne and Crenshaw County have lost an extraordinary person. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time.
