We share stories, spotlights, resources, and events to inspire transformation across Missouri. The Missouri Main Street Connection works to ensure that the downtown districts in Missouri’s cities and towns remain essential elements to their sense of community, their cultural heritage and to the state’s economy. Downtown revitalization is encouraged through economic development within the context o

f historic preservation. The primary purpose of a local Main Street® Program is to ensure the long-term success of the downtown by creating, educating, training and empowering a comprehensive, professional, volunteer-based downtown revitalization organization. The Missouri Main Street Connection assists communities in the development of a local organization that adopts the Main Street® principles and utilizes those principles daily. MMSC provides on-site consultation and technical assistance to local programs selected through an application process. Quarterly workshops and manager training sessions are also utilized to prepare local Main Street groups for a wide range of revitalization efforts. Results of this comprehensive effort include small business development, strengthening existing businesses, job creation, commercial district revitalization which encompasses façade renovations and restorations, streetscape and infrastructure improvements, and cultural events to enhance tourism development, all of which result in a renewed confidence in Missouri’s downtowns.

Can you spot the architectural details of these buildings in Main Street communities?

If so, do you know why it is metal pressed detailing is historically and architecturally important?

Pressed metal storefronts and cornices represent the industrial commerce era that swept through the United States. Prior to metal, detailing was often made with plaster, carved wood, or sometimes decorative brick. These beautiful pieces of architecture were made from compressing a sheet of metal between two stamps or dies to create the desired design.

Today, this metal detailing ties Missouri’s small communities together in a shared history of our country.

Check out where our team was in May!

In Ste. Genevieve and Macon, Ben White and consultants Randy Wilson (Community Design Solutions) and Ben Muldrow (Arnett Muldrow & Associates) worked with each community to conduct input meetings, participate in a district tour, and provide several building owners with renderings for their buildings.

Additionally, they shared resources and expertise on building utilization, branding, and training on the Economic Vitality, Design, and Promotion points of Main Street. These services were provided through MMSC’s partnership with the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development.

We are grateful for Ste. Genevieve, Macon, and each community we work with. We look forward to seeing what happens in these communities soon.
