Ernest Ernie Henry Riess, 91, of Baden, MD, passed away peacefully at home on August 16, 2026. Ernie was born on May 21, 1935, the youngest son of the late Albert Pop and Gertrude Riess, on a small wedge of land in Baden, known as Horsehead. He grew up on

In 1955, two brothers from Baden, Ernie and Dick Riess, got together with others and founded the Baden Volunteer Fire Department.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of one of our “Founding Members” Ernie Riess.

Ernie was one of our last two remaining members that were present when the Department was founded in 1955.

He will certainly be missed.

***UPDATE 7/27/26***
The helmet was returned last night. Thank you to the man for doing the right thing and returning it. Also - we are thankful for how well social media and the public were in spreading the word.

When one of our members passes away, we hang this black “funeral drape” or bunting on the front of the fire station. We also hang an old antique fire helmet when the member was a firefighter. Last week, just prior to the funeral service for Shirley & Buddy Boswell, a storm came through and the helmet blew off and landed in the parking lot.

This man stopped in the parking lot while one of our members was backing a truck in the fire station. The man put the helmet in his vehicle and left with it.

***Traffic Advisory Friday July 24, 2026*** Line of Duty Death Funeral for Shirley Boswell & also Buddy Boswell

Funeral services for Shirley and Buddy will be held at the Baden Volunteer Fire Department on Friday, July 24, 2026.

Expect heavy traffic delays between 11 AM - 1 PM in the area of the firehouse and through Malcolm as the funeral procession goes to the cemetery.

Internment will be at Trinity Memorial Gardens in Waldorf immediately following the service.

Repass will be immediately following internment at Baden VFD. Anyone wishing to bring a dessert (only) please bring it either the night before between 1700 & 1900 hours or the morning of.
