We still get a lot of questions about the motorized scooters in town. To simplify things, we'll cover the area(s) of the ordinance that we get asked about most often:
-If the driver is under 14 years of age, they must operate the scooter on the sidewalk (when one is available), they must wear a helmet, they cannot have more than one person on the scooter, and they cannot exceed 15 mph.
-If the driver is 14 years of age or older, they may operate the scooter on the sidewalk or street, however, where there is a shared use path, the driver is to drive on the shared use path, and they cannot exceed the speed limit on the street.
-All drivers must obey traffic control devices, and unless they have a headlight/headlamp, they can only operate the scooter 15 minutes after sunrise to 15 minutes prior to sunset.
We hope this clears things up. The complete city ordinance pertaining to electric scooters can be found on the city website under city ordinances, chapter 12-22.
Let's have a safe summer everyone!
