Good evening everyone,

We join our community and educators across Vermont in remembering Dr. William J. Mathis, former Superintendent of the Rutland Northeast Supervisory Union, who passed away recently after a remarkable 61-year career in public education.

Dr. Mathis served RNESU for 27 years, from 1982-2009, leading with unwavering dedication, a deep commitment to students, and a belief that every child deserves access to a high-quality education. When the landmark Brigham v. State of Vermont lawsuit was brought to challenge the state's inequitable local property tax system, Dr. Mathis served as the primary expert witness. His compelling testimony on the severe disparities between property wealthy and under-resourced towns helped pave the way for the historic, unanimous 1997 Vermont Supreme Court decision. A respected educator, scholar, and advocate for educational equity, his influence extended far beyond our region, helping shape education policy across Vermont and the nation.

Throughout his career, Dr. Mathis championed public education as the foundation of a strong democracy, emphasizing critical thinking, creativity, communication, and citizenship. His legacy, influence and caring is felt throughout all of Vermont, but especially in the lives on in the countless students, educators, and communities he served.

Our thoughts are with Dr. Mathis's family, friends, former colleagues, and all those whose lives were touched by his leadership, service, and dedication to public education.

Amazing work by the RNESUper Band in the Brandon and Pittsford Memorial Day parades yesterday! The Super Band is made up of members from all five of our district schools, elementary through high school, and they all did a great job marching and playing an assortment of patriotic songs.

Special thanks to Keith's Country Store & Deli for preparing and delivering pizzas to all these hungry musicians!

Today, Superintendent Sanchez is spending the day at Otter Valley, shadowing a few ninth grade students to experience firsthand what a day in the life of an OV student is really like. Pictured here in Algebra and Humanities class, Sup. Sanchez also went for a hike with Moosalamoo, and enjoyed some OV lunch.

The new MyPowerHub features are now live!

We ask for your patience and grace as teachers and staff learn and adjust to this new system. Like any transition, there may be a few bumps along the way, but we are confident it will be well worth it. Our goal is to build strong, consistent use of MyPowerHub across the district, with widespread adoption by the fall. So, for now - send a teacher a message to say Hi, but still put those time sensitive questions in an email.

Last Call for Survey Input! Panorama survey closes this Friday, May 22nd.

RNESU Families - We are inviting you to participate in our School Climate and Culture Survey, administered through Panorama Education. This survey is an important opportunity for you to share your perspectives on your child’s school experience.

The survey asks about topics such as school climate, communication, safety, relationships, and overall satisfaction. Your feedback helps us better understand what is working well and where we can improve to better support all students and families. The information we gather is used by school and district leaders to guide planning, strengthen practices, and ensure we are creating welcoming, supportive environments for every student.

We strongly encourage all families to take a few minutes to complete the survey. Your voice matters, and higher participation helps us make more informed and representative decisions.
