Coming Soon: Meade County Sheriff’s Office Flock Transparency Portal

A new online portal will provide public access to information about Flock camera usage, policies, data retention, safeguards, statistics, and accountability measures.

Following Wednesday evening’s community meeting at the Meade County Courthouse, the Meade County Sheriff’s Office is developing a Flock Transparency Portal in response to questions and concerns shared by members of the community.

The portal will be available at https://www.meadeky.gov under the Meade County Sheriff’s Office section. It will provide clear, regularly updated information about the Sheriff’s Office’s use of Flock automated license plate reader technology.

The portal is expected to include:

• An overview of how and why the technology is used
• Camera and vehicle detection statistics
• Law enforcement search and hotlist alert information
• Data retention practices
• Organizations sharing or receiving network data
• Acceptable and prohibited uses
• Access, security, and human-verification requirements
• Information about what the system detects and does not detect
• The Sheriff’s Office ALPR policy
• A downloadable public search audit

The Meade County Sheriff’s Office uses this technology to support legitimate public safety and law enforcement purposes, including criminal investigations, locating stolen vehicles, and identifying vehicles associated with wanted or missing persons. The system does not use facial recognition.

Access is limited to authorized personnel. Searches must have a legitimate law enforcement purpose and are documented and audited. Alerts must be independently verified by an officer before enforcement action is taken.

Additional information and a link to the portal will be announced when it becomes available. This initiative reflects our commitment to transparency, accountability, public safety, and the protection of individual privacy.

NEW KENTUCKY SCHOOL BUS SAFETY LAW

As students head back to school, we need to give all our drivers the heads up about important changes to Kentucky’s school bus stopping law, effective July 15, 2026.

The New Rule:
Drivers must stop for a school or church bus displaying its stop arm and flashing red lights from either direction on all roads.

The only exception: You do not have to stop when traveling in the opposite direction on a roadway with four or more lanes that is separated by an elevated barrier or an unpaved median. Just to be clear, you must stop in all lanes on four lane highways with a paved center turn lane.

If there is no physical barrier or unpaved median, you must stop—even on a four-lane road.

Vehicle Owner Responsibility:
If a driver illegally passes a stopped school bus and cannot be identified, Kentucky law now presumes the registered owner or lessee was driving and subjects them to the penalties provided by law unless that presumption is rebutted.

Help Keep Our Students Safe
Slow down, stay alert, put your phone away, and always watch for flashing school bus lights. A few extra seconds can save a life.
