Dear BPS Families,
Today marks the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001, and we pause as a school community to remember a day that changed our nation and touched countless lives.
For all of our students and some of our staff, September 11 is a historical event they have learned about but did not personally experience. For others, it remains a deeply personal memory. As educators, it is our responsibility to help students understand this important moment in our nation’s history in ways that are age-appropriate, respectful, and thoughtful.
Today, students may participate in a variety of ways to honor and remember September 11. They may wear red, white, and blue, listen to a morning announcement, observe a thoughtful moment of silence, participate in a town event, share a luncheon with first responders, or engage in an age-appropriate classroom discussion about this critical moment in American history.
We believe it is especially important to educate our students about the extraordinary courage and selflessness demonstrated by first responders, emergency personnel, members of the military, and ordinary people who stepped forward to help others. Their actions serve as a powerful reminder of the importance of service, unity, compassion, and caring for one another.
In our schools, we will honor September 11 with dignity and respect. We will remember those who were lost, recognize those who served and continue to serve, and reaffirm our commitment to building schools and communities where every person is treated with compassion, kindness, and respect.
Thank you for partnering with us as we remember this important moment in our nation’s history and help our students understand the enduring lessons of September 11.
