1st Combined Arms Battalion, 194th Armor Remember Bataan, Never Forget! "We're the battling bastards of Bataan;
No mama, no papa, no Uncle Sam. And nobody gives a damn. Nobody gives a damn." Maj.

The 1st Combined Arms Battalion, 194th Armor Regiment, is a Minnesota Army National Guard battalion headquartered in Brainerd. The overall unit mission is to provide heavy armor and mechanized infantry ground combat power to the 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 34th Infantry Division. Ther

e are 6 major units in the 1-194 AR (CAB): Headquarters and Headquarters Company in Brainerd, A Company in Sauk Center, B Company in St Cloud, C Company in East St Paul, and G Company located at CRTC. The 1-194 AR (CAB) unit lineage traces back to WWII with A Company, 194th Tank Battalion. As the United States participation in the Second World War, much of America's early fighting strength came from the Army National Guard. On February 10, 1941 Brainerd's 34th Tank Company of the Minnesota National Guard, commanded by Ernest B. Miller, was federalized and ordered to Fort Lewis, Washington for training. At Fort Lewis, the Brainerd-based 34th Tank Company was combined with two National Guard tank companies from St Joseph, Missouri and Salinas, California to form the 194th Tank Battalion. Miller was appointed as the battalion commander of the 194th Tank Battalion following the formation of the new tank battalion. Prior to leaving Fort Lewis, the 194th Tank Battalion was comprised of A Company from Brainerd, Minnesota; B Company from Saint Joseph, Missouri and C Company from Salinas, California. The 194th Tank Battalion deployed to the Philippines during the fall of 1941 in support of its defense from a possible Japanese attack. The 194th Tank Battalion became the first armored force in United States history to deploy overseas when it deployed to the Philippines to defend Manila Bay. Members of 194th Tank Battalion fought bravely during the Battle of Bataan and eventually endured the infamous Bataan Death March. Eighty two men of the 34th Tank Company left Brainerd in 1941, 64 accompanied the 194th overseas to the Philippines. One man was wounded and evacuated, two went on to Officer Candidate School, three were killed in action, 29 died as Prisoners of War and 29 survived captivity. Of the original 64 Minnesota National Guardsmen only 32 survived to return to Brainerd after the end of WWII. The 1-194 AR (CAB) battalion motto is "Remember Bataan ... Never Forget!"

Today, 1-194 AR (CAB) stands ready to provide personnel and equipment in support of federal, state and community missions in order to assist and/or protect the citizens of Minnesota and the United States.

Bastards,

Our unit has just wrapped up an exceptional Annual Training (AT) at Camp Ripley Training Center, running from 10-24 August 2024. During this period, the Bastards showcased our formidable capabilities, executing a comprehensive training regimen designed to enhance our combat effectiveness. With the addition of the new Joint Light Tactical Vehicles, we expanded our operational prowess, expending over 142,000 rounds across nine live-fire ranges.

Our AT was packed with diverse and rigorous training exercises:

• Mounted Land Navigation: Our crews navigated challenging terrain, honing their skills in precision movement and tactical decision-making under pressure. This training was crucial in ensuring that our Soldiers can operate seamlessly in any environment.

• Mounted Machine Gun Table VI: Soldiers engaged targets with mounted machine guns, focusing on accuracy, speed, and coordination. This qualification table was a critical step in ensuring our fire teams are ready to deliver overwhelming firepower when it matters most.

• Mortar Training and Evaluation Program: Our mortar teams refined their expertise in delivering indirect fire, achieving pinpoint accuracy and rapid response times. This training emphasized the importance of coordination and communication in supporting ground operations.

• Crew-Serve Weapons Qualification: Soldiers demonstrated their proficiency with crew-served weapons, including the M240B machine gun and the M2 .50 caliber machine gun. This qualification ensured that our teams are prepared to lay down sustained, effective fire in support of battalion operations.

• M4 Carbine Qualification: Every Soldier in the battalion qualified on the M4 Carbine, reaffirming our commitment to marksmanship and the fundamental skills that form the backbone of our combat effectiveness.

• M17 Pistol Qualification: Soldiers also completed the M17 Pistol Qualification, a vital component of our close-quarters battle training, ensuring that every Soldier is capable of defending themselves and their teammates in any situation.

• Medical Simulator Training Center Competitions: Medics and combat lifesavers engaged in realistic, high-pressure medical scenarios designed to test and improve their life-saving skills. These competitions fostered a spirit of teamwork and excellence under stress.

• Battalion Staff Shoot Culminating Event: The training culminated in a Battalion Staff Shoot, where leaders and Soldiers alike demonstrated their proficiency in marksmanship and coordination, reinforcing the importance of leadership in combat scenarios.

As we conclude this rigorous training period, we take great pride in recognizing the exceptional efforts of our Soldiers. We are pleased to announce the approval of 22 awards, honoring those who have gone above and beyond in their dedication to the mission and their fellow Soldiers.

Together, we have demonstrated the strength, skill, and pride of the 1st Battalion, 194th Armor Battalion. Let’s carry this momentum forward as we continue to strive for excellence.
