As our kids head back to school, we know mornings and afternoons can get busy for everyone. We’re asking drivers to give themselves a little extra time, slow down, and watch closely for school buses and students.

Minnesota’s school bus law has changed: when a school bus is stopped and its red lights begin flashing, drivers must stop at least 20 feet away. You no longer need to wait for the stop arm to be fully extended.

The message is simple: flashing red lights mean STOP.

Please stay stopped until the red lights are no longer flashing. A few extra seconds of patience can make a big difference in helping our kids get to and from school safely.
We hope all of our students, families, teachers, and school staff have a safe and great school year!

Labor Day, an annual celebration of workers and their achievements, originated during one of American labor history’s most dismal chapters.

In the late 1800s, at the height of the Industrial Revolution in the United States, the average American laborer worked 12-hour days, seven days a week, in order to eke out a basic living. Despite restrictions in some states, children as young as 5 or 6 toiled in mills, factories and mines across the country, earning a fraction of their adult counterparts’ wages.

As manufacturing increasingly supplanted agriculture as the wellspring of American employment, labor unions—which had first appeared in the late 18th century at the dawn of the labor movement—grew more prominent and vocal. Unions began organizing strikes and rallies to protest poor conditions and compel employers to renegotiate hours and pay.

City entities are closed today in observation of Labor Day.
