Throwback Thursday!
The village of Bradford has had a multitude of names since its founding. The village was originally known as Shattuck’s Weir and in 1758 the area saw its first industries including a sawmill and a gristmill. Later the village became known as Dorrville, named after Thomas Wilson Dorr, leader of the Dorr Rebellion and also Governor of Rhode Island. In 1861, the name was changed again to Niantic and remained so until 1911. At that time the Bradford Dyeing Association requested the name be changed to Bradford.
