In the Tenderloin neighborhood of San Francisco, there’s a church where the morning sound isn’t choir music—it’s soft snoring and slow, steady breathing.

St. Boniface Church partners with a nonprofit called The Gubbio Project, started in 2004 when community activist Shelly Roder and Franciscan friar Father Louis Vitale decided the pews shouldn’t sit empty while people outside were freezing and exhausted. A church, they thought, should be a refuge, not just a place for Sunday rituals.

So on weekday mornings, around 6 a.m., the doors open. People come in from the sidewalks, shoulders tight from a night of staying alert. They pick a pew or a mat, curl up, and finally let themselves sleep. There’s no sign-in sheet, no intake form, no ID check. Those barriers stay outside with the cold and the noise.

Most days, about 200–225 unhoused neighbors rest here while volunteers move quietly through the aisles with blankets, socks, coffee, hygiene kits—and sometimes foot care or a gentle massage. They call it “sacred sleep,” a daily reminder that rest and dignity shouldn’t be a luxury

Seeing this makes me tear up. When I was homeless, I never publicly pandered. I’m not judging him and that’s not what I’m saying. I myself have just never done it. I have sat out in the snow crying and I’ve slept out in the snow because I didn’t have a home. I feel for him so much.
