'neigh' to banning horses on the beach

'neigh' to banning horses on the beach In 2011, the City of Bradenton considered banning horseback riding at the Palma Sola Causeway (PSC). The public was not divided on this question.

The People love the horses and did not want to lose the tradition. The City of Bradenton is about to end a decades-old tradition: horseback riding on the beach at the Palma Sola Causeway. Once again, non-horse people are taking away the rights of horse owners because of ignorance, false information, and misunderstanding. In addition, this action--if taken--will kill a successful business a put a d

ozen local kids out of work in a slow economy. If you care about the rights of horse owners and support small business, please call the city council members and ask them to vote NO on banning horses from Palma Sola Bay.

Last week, I met with 4 members of the Board of County Commissioners to discuss the proposed ban of horses on the Palma Sola Causeway.

They were Commissioners Jonsson, Trace, Whitmore, and Servia. All 4 commissioners agree that horse p**p likely has no measurable impact on water quality. And, while it’s obvious that someone is riding in the seagrass, none of the 4 said they favor banning horses.

Commissioner Trace said, “If they do ban horses, they will probably have to ban *all* commercial activity on the causeway (kayak rentals, commercial fishing, flyboarding, jet ski rentals, and wind surfing). If that happens, they will also ban duck hunting in another location.

At this point, no determination has been made public as to the question of jurisdiction. The County Attorney hasn’t returned my phone calls.

I presented a petition with 1,246 signatures to all seven members of the board. Thanks so much to all of you who took the time to participate in that effort. We are a very strong community.

Enterococci are common members of the microbiota in the gastrointestinal tract of mammals and other animals including birds, insects, and reptiles and can also be found in soil, water, and food (Byappanahalli et al., 2012; Fisher and Phillips, 2009).

Manatee County's Board of County Commissioners has voted unanimously to explore "regulating" horseback riding at Palma Sola Bay. We believe this may mean banning equestrian use entirely.

If you would like to see this activity continue, please call them and tell them how you feel. Please write a letter to the editor or your newspapers or call your local TV stations. Please share your feelings on Facebook and other social media. Please tell your family and friends, your coworkers, your classmates, and anyone else who can help.

Horseback riding within sensitive waters of Manatee, especially along Palma Sola Causeway may soon be banned, according to county officials who are following in the footsteps of Pinellas County’s recent action.
