Beach renourishment has begun at Coquina- check out the link for info 🏝️

Dredging of the Coquina Beach restoration project started this week to restore nearly a mile of Coquina Beach with 63,450 cubic yards of sand lost to Hurricane Idalia.

The project, which is federally funded through FEMA at a 75% cost share, with the balance split evenly between the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) and Manatee County, is anticipated to be completed in November and will have a secondary benefit of improving navigation through the pass.

Work areas will be marked with temporary construction fencing and will move along the beach as work progresses. Some beach access points may be temporarily closed near active construction areas. The south end of Coquina will be closed for dredging and construction equipment.

Every effort will be made to keep beach access available whenever possible. Work will take place 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, in order to complete the project in the timeliest manner.

Upon finishing his shift this past Saturday night, our Officer “Johnny T” Tsakiri was hit by a drunk driver at the intersection of Cortez Rd. and 75th St. W. Ofc. Tsakiri received minor scratches and bruising from the deployed airbags, was taken to the hospital, and released. The driver of the other vehicle was arrested for DUI. The patrol car was totaled, but fortunately Ofc. Tsakiri was not badly hurt. However, if his timing had been off by just a few seconds, it could have been much worse. The incident is yet another example of the dangers of drinking and driving.

Gulf Islands Ferry Adds Third Stop at Coquina Beach!

Round trip from Historic Bridge Street Pier to Coquina Beach are $9 for adults; $7 for seniors, military and children. The fare remains free for seniors aged 80 and older and children under the age of 4.

Getting to and from the mainland to Anna Maria Island is easier than ever with the new Gulf Islands Ferry.
