Last night, our Ofc. Tom Ferrara spotted a disoriented nesting female sea turtle headed towards Gulf Drive. He called Anna Maria Island Turtle Watch & Shorebird Monitoring, AMITW and together, she was turned around and made it safely back to her home in the Gulf.

If you see a sea turtle in trouble, call AMITW at 941-301-8434 or FWC at 888-404-3922.

This photo was taken without a flash as the turtle was headed back to the water after nesting. If you encounter a sea turtle on the beach, please remember that any light source can cause disorientation, so only use the light of the moon and stars to enjoy watching her in action.

Thanks Officer Tom for doing your best to protect both wildlife and people in Bradenton Beach!

Sea Turtle and Shorebird safety tips for the busy weekend-

While youโ€™re enjoying the long weekend, here are a few easy ways to help protect turtles, shorebirds, and other wildlife:

๐ŸฆฉGive shorebirds space as you walk the beach
Respect posted shorebird closures and avoid flying kites or drones, and keep pets nearby.
๐Ÿข Fill in holes and knock down sandcastles before you leaveโ€”sea turtles can get trapped.
๐Ÿ—‘ Pick up all trash, fishing line, and food scraps so you don't attract predators.
Do not use fireworks on the beach
๐Ÿšค Use slow speeds and polarized sunglasses to keep an eye out for wildlife when you are on the water.
๐ŸŒ™ Keep beach-facing lights off and do not use flashlights or cell phone lights on the beach.

Share the beach and leave only footprints. ๐ŸŒŠโ˜€๏ธ
Happy Memorial Weekend!
