Gallatin County’s financial problems are getting worse.
In Part 2 of our series, we examine the High-Risk Auditee designation, the $8.5 million over-taxation of Big Sky Fire District residents, and the continued failure to fix long-running cash reconciliation issues.
County Administrator Jim Doar has indicated that FY2024 is likely to produce another Disclaimer of Opinion. Taxpayers are the ones left holding the bag.

I am thrilled to announce that Montana will receive up to $127 million in a landmark settlement agreement with Meta for intentionally designing their platforms to be addictive to minors.

In 2021, my office launched an investigation and found that Meta concealed the mental health harms its platform caused kids while misleading the public. At least half of the money will go toward children's mental health programs, various school programs, and related efforts to improve online safety for children.

Gallatin County Attorney Audrey Cromwell is facing growing criticism over plea deals and case dismissals.
In the high-profile Christopher Wardle case, a felony strangulation charge was dropped and the defendant received no jail time. Attorney General Austin Knudsen called the agreement a dangerous message to domestic abusers. The Bozeman Police Protective Association also publicly condemned similar plea deals.
New data shows a sharp rise in dismissals, including a high percentage of assault and Partner Family Member Assault cases that were dismissed or reduced.
