On Sept. 7, 2026, at approximately 3:30 a.m., the Bozeman Police Department responded to a local medical center for a report of an adult man who sustained stab wounds. Through further investigation, officers found the victim had been stabbed by a roommate at a residence in the 5000 block of Saxon Way in Bozeman. The victim is expected to survive their wounds and is receiving medical care.

Officers responded to the residence where the suspect barricaded himself inside a bedroom. Gallatin County Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) responded to the scene due to the violent nature of the stabbing. At approximately 8:50 a.m., the suspect was taken into custody without incident. He is currently being held at the Gallatin County Detention Center on a charge of Attempted Homicide, a felony, and is scheduled to appear in Gallatin County Justice Court on Sept. 8, 2026.

“We are grateful for the assistance of the Gallatin County Sheriff's Office, Montana State University Police Department, Bozeman Fire Department, American Medical Response, Gallatin County 911 and for the patience and cooperation of the residents surrounding this incident,” stated Bozeman Police Deputy Chief Joe Swanson.

Our officers regularly participate in training designed to strengthen their skills, build confidence and ensure they are prepared to respond when our community needs them the most.

From everyday situations to high-pressure scenarios, training helps our officers stay ready and continue to provide the best service possible to our community.

09/07/2026, 0652AM. There is currently a heavy law enforcement presence in the area of Laurel Pkwy and W Oak St as officers and SWAT deal with an ongoing incident. Please avoid the area.

This week, we had 1243 calls for service, 134 cases opened and 18 Party Noise Calls for Service. On August 29th, an officer responded to a party noise complaint at 10:12 p.m. Upon arrival to the address, the officer observed a male urinating on the side of the house and people going in and out of the front door. The officer knocked on the door and spoke with the resident and asked them to keep the noise to a minimum so no more complaints would occur. The resident agreed. Later that night, dispatch received more noise complaints and the officer returned to the house where it appeared that the party had grown in size. The resident was told everyone needed to leave the house immediately and was cited for Disorderedly Conduct.

We’re proud to congratulate two new Special Security Officers and four new police officers who were officially sworn in on Tuesday.

After three-and-a-half weeks of pre-service training, our newest members are ready to begin putting that training into practice. Our four new officers are already in Helena for the Montana Law Enforcement Academy, while our two new SSOs will begin their on-the-job training with the department.

We’re excited to welcome all six to the team and look forward to seeing them begin serving the Bozeman community.

On Aug. 30, 2026, at approximately 2:08 a.m., the Bozeman Police Department responded to a 911 call of a rollover vehicle crash and stabbing near Savannah Street and Davis Lane. After crashing their vehicle, the driver, an adult man, fled the scene on foot and stabbed a bystander. The bystander had attempted to detain the subject and sustained several stab wounds. The bystander was treated for their injuries at Bozeman Health Deaconess Hospital and is expected to survive their injuries.

With the assistance of the bystander and other witnesses, a description of the suspect was developed at the crash scene. Patrol officers and detectives extensively searched the surrounding area, but the suspect was not located. Several hours later, an on-duty Bozeman Police Sergeant found the suspect near the area of North 19th Avenue and Baxter Lane.

The suspect was taken into custody and faces charges of Assault with Weapon – felony, Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol and/or Drugs – 2nd Offense – misdemeanor, and Fail to Give Notice of Accident by Quickest Means/Apparent Damage Over $1000 – misdemeanor. The suspect is currently being held on a $250,000 bond after appearing in Gallatin County Justice Court.

“Thank you to the Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office, Montana State University Police Department, Bozeman Fire Department, and American Medical Response for their assistance during this investigation,” stated Bozeman Police Deputy Chief Joe Swanson.

Bozeman Police had a great time at Catapalooza, meeting students and welcoming everyone back to campus and the community. Events like this give our officers a chance to connect with students, answer questions and build relationships outside of an emergency.

This week, we had 1279 calls for service, 141 cases opened and 204 traffic stops. On August 21st, an officer observed a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed on W Main St, a 25 MPH zone. Once the suspect was stopped, the officer observed an open alcoholic beverage behind the driver’s seat and the suspect admitted to consuming “three shots and a drink”. The Standardized Field Sobriety Tests were administered and the officer determined the suspect was too impaired to operate a vehicle. The suspect was transported to the GCDC, where they provided two breath samples that showed a BAC of .186, more than twice the legal limit. The suspect was charged with Aggravated Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol and/or Drugs 1st Offense.
