Tomorrow, Wednesday September 30th, 2026 brings to a close the long and successful law enforcement career for our Chief of Police Kevin Spate.

Kevin began his career with the Boyne City Police Department on September 27, 1999, hired by then-Chief Randy Howard. Following the hiring of Jeff Gaither as Chief of Police in 2012, Kevin was promoted to Assistant Chief, a position he held for 7 years. On November 6, 2019, Kevin was hired as Chief of Police. Over the past 7 years Kevin has done a tremendous job leading our department.

We will miss him but are thankful for all he has given throughout his 27-year career. If you see him over the next two days please join us in congratulating him on his distinguished career and upcoming retirement.

Today we remember the nearly 3,000 lives lost. We remember the first responders who ran toward danger. We remember the families whose lives changed in an instant, and the countless acts of courage, sacrifice, compassion, and unity that followed.

Throughout the morning, listen for the bell toll as we invite our community to join us in pausing for a moment of silence at the times that marked the events of that day:

8:46 a.m. – Flight 11 strikes the North Tower
9:03 a.m. – Flight 175 strikes the South Tower
9:37 a.m. – Flight 77 strikes the Pentagon
9:59 a.m. – The South Tower collapses
10:03 a.m. – Flight 93 crashes near Shanksville, Pennsylvania
10:28 a.m. – The North Tower collapses

Take a moment to remember a life. Remember a family. Remember the bravery of ordinary people who did extraordinary things. And remember how, in the days that followed, Americans stood beside one another, not as strangers, but as neighbors.

Twenty-five years later, may we continue to carry that spirit with us.

We remember. We honor. We will never forget. 🇺🇸
