Last night both Town Meetings approved the FY2027 BBRSD Budget, thank you to all who attended!

Thank you to the BBRSD Admin for their hard work and dedication, putting in many hours to do everything they could to make this budget as workable as possible! While this budget does cut positions and programs across the district which were very popular, we tried to balance the needs of all stakeholders.

We now look forward to a successful end to this school year and a successful transition to our new full time superintendent in July!

Please come to Town Meeting on Monday, May 4, (in Berlin at 6:30 at BMS and Boylston at 7pm at Tahanto) to support the school budget.

As a reminder, the regional school budget process has n Massachusetts requires the school committee to approve a budget and then send the proposed school budget and assessments to Town Meeting for voters to decide on. The "appropriating authority" to approve a regional school budget is the Town Meeting. You, voters, get to decide what to support in our schools.

As we know from years past, a "no" vote, or any change to the school committee proposed budget/assessment (Berlin - Operating $9,009,337.00
Capital $ 902,296.00,
Boylston - Operating $13,019,682.00
Capital $1,053,815.00) at Town Meeting, and the school budget is considered by the State to have failed.

A failed vote at Town Meeting would require we start the process over again, with the school committee re-voting a budget, and then special town meetings being called for a new vote, likely toward the end of June.

This delay could have devastating impacts on your schools as the district is required, contractually, to give Non-Professional Teacher Status teachers notice by June 15 as to whether or not they will be hired back for next year. Without an approved budget, we can’t know how schools will look in September.

On March 10 the BBRSD School Committee voted to approve the FY27 budget proposed by the administration. Since then, there have been several conversations between the administration and representatives from our member towns.

On Tuesday, April 7, the administration will present a plan to school committee to cut over a half-million dollars from the FY27 budget. While these reductions aim to meet town financial goals and avoid a tax override in Boylston, the loss of more than a half-million dollars will have a significant impact on our schools.

Out of respect for our dedicated employees who may be impacted, we will not be sharing specific details at this time. Administration will first meet individually with those affected before any further information is made public at the April 7 school committee meeting.

You may wish to mark your calendar for these upcoming meetings:

🗓️ MONDAY, APRIL 6 (Boylston Town Offices)
Finance Committee: 6:00 PM
Select Board Joint Meeting with Finance Committee: 6:30 PM

🗓️ TUESDAY, APRIL 7 (Tahanto)
School Committee Meeting: 5:00 PM
Decisions of this magnitude require community input. We hope to see you there.

Tuesday night the committee will be talking about next years budget for the first time with any significant detail this year. Remember last March when many were so surprised at all the budget issues and “hearing them for the first time this afternoon“ that you wanted “more transparency next year”? Tuesday December 9th is your chance for that transparency. Don’t get to March and learn about it for the first time, please.
