In preparation for the upcoming Labor Day holiday weekend police across the Commonwealth as well as the Country have started the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign. Although we enforce DUI's all year long this next 2 weeks will have enhanced patrols, extra officers out, DUI checkpoints and other enforcement measures. Last year just over the Labor Day Weekend there were 62 DUI arrests. It's not worth it, get a Designated Driver, Uber, Lyft, stay put, just don't drive.

At approximately 21:30 hours on 8-7-2026 a pursuit was initiated by this agency on a vehicle doing 66/25 zone. After a short pursuit the subject fled on foot and one passenger was detained. With the assistance of Southampton County Sheriff’s Office and K-9 unit a perimeter was established and a K-9 track was started. The suspect returned to the scene and turned himself in. He was arrested and charged accordingly. There is no threat to the community. Thank You to all the Deputies of the Southampton County Sheriffs Office that assisted.

***NEWS RELEASE***

DEPUTIES HAVE MULTIPLE LPR SUCCESSES IN JULY

For immediate release:

Courtland, VA – During the month of July 2026, Southampton County deputies were able to make arrests, recover stolen property and locate missing persons with the assistance of available license plate reader (LPR) technology.

On July 10, 2026, Southampton deputies received an alert from our LPR system that a vehicle associated with a missing person from Greensboro, NC was entering Southampton County. Deputies were able to locate the vehicle and identified the driver as the person reported missing from North Carolina. This individual appeared to be suffering from a mental health crisis. Deputies were able to get the appropriate assistance for the individual and coordinate with authorities in North Carolina to have the person reunited with their family.

Also on July 10, 2026, deputies took a report for the unauthorized use of a vehicle in the area of Delaware Road and Rose Valley Road that had failed to be returned to its rightful owner. On July 11, 2026, deputies located the vehicle in the City of Franklin. The vehicle was recovered and returned to its rightful owner. The subject with the vehicle was arrested for violation of the Code of Virginia 18.2-102, unauthorized use of a vehicle and transported to the Southampton County Jail without incident.

On July 21, 2026, Southampton deputies received an alert from the LPR system, as well as, notification from a neighboring jurisdiction, that a stolen vehicle was traveling into the County. Deputies were able to locate and stop this vehicle that was reported stolen from Florida. The driver was arrested for possession of stolen property, possession of schedule I/II narcotics and driving without a valid operator’s license.

On July 25, 2026, deputies received an alert for a vehicle associated with a subject who had active warrants. Deputies located the vehicle, which at that time had travelled into the City of Franklin on Armory Drive and were able to identify the driver as the wanted subject. That individual was arrested on a Southampton County Capias for Contempt of Court and transported to the Southampton County Jail without incident.

The last success for the month came on July 31, 2026 when deputies received an alert for a stolen vehicle out of Florida. That vehicle was located and stopped by deputies without incident. The vehicle is in the process of being returned to its rightful owners. Deputies have coordinated with detectives in Florida to assist with their investigation. There were no arrests immediately made in connection with this case.
