The Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office is proud to provide the Project Lifesaver Program, a free service designed to help protect individuals who may wander due to Alzheimer’s, dementia, autism, or other cognitive conditions.

Our deputies regularly train and conduct monthly battery changes to ensure participants’ transmitters are functioning properly. These visits also give us an opportunity to build relationships with families and provide peace of mind to caregivers.

💙 If you have a loved one who may be at risk of wandering, Project Lifesaver may be able to help. Early intervention saves lives, and having a transmitter in place can significantly reduce search times and improve outcomes.

📞 If you’d like more information or think someone you care about could benefit from this program, please contact the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office or send us a message. We’d be happy to answer your questions and discuss enrollment.

Together, we can help bring loved ones home safely.

Southside Behavioral Health recently hosted its 23rd 40-hour Core Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) Training, bringing together participants from local law enforcement agencies, Sheriff’s Offices, Hospital Security, and the Meherrin River Regional Jail (MRRJ).

This class reflects ongoing collaboration between law enforcement and mental health professionals dedicated to improving crisis response across Southside Virginia. CIT instructors, representing both fields, provide education on mental health, de-escalation strategies, and community resources to help individuals in crisis access the care they need while diverting them from unnecessary involvement in the criminal justice system.

Congratulations to all members of our 23rd graduating class! The next CIT Training will be held in September.

For more information about CIT Training, please contact Wanda C. Brock, Clinical Training Coordinator/CIT Coordinator, at 434-572-6916 ext. 1564.

⚠️ SCAM ALERT ⚠️

The Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office would like to make citizens aware of a growing scam known as a “Brushing Scam.”

Residents across the country have reported receiving unexpected packages containing inexpensive or random items they never ordered. While these packages may appear harmless, scammers often use your name and address to create fake online purchases and post fraudulent “verified buyer” reviews on shopping websites.

If you receive a package connected to a brushing scam,

-Do not scan QR codes or call phone numbers included in the package.

-Do not click links from follow-up texts or emails related to the shipment.

-Check your bank accounts, credit cards, email accounts,
and online shopping accounts for suspicious activity.

-Change passwords if you notice anything unusual.

-Report the incident to the retailer or delivery platform involved.

-Monitor your credit and personal information for possible identity misuse.

In most cases in the U.S., you are not required to return or pay for unordered merchandise. Many people simply keep or dispose of the item.

If you believe you may be the victim of fraud or identity theft, contact the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office and report suspicious activity immediately.

Effective immediately, the Mecklenburg County, Virginia burn ban has been lifted.

We appreciate everyone’s cooperation over the last several weeks while conditions remained extremely dry and hazardous.

Even though the burn ban has been lifted, conditions can still change quickly and outdoor burning should always be done safely and responsibly. Before burning, clear the area around the fire to help prevent it from spreading. In accordance with Virginia law, any fire located within 150 feet of dry grass, brush, woods, or other combustible material must be constantly attended by a competent person with adequate fire suppression equipment readily available. Fires should never be left unattended and must be completely extinguished before leaving the area.

Please remember that anyone responsible for starting a wildfire can be held liable for suppression costs and damages.

As always, use common sense, monitor weather conditions, and avoid burning on windy days.

Thank you again for helping us protect Mecklenburg County.
