ATTENTION BOROUGH RESIDENTS: We were just made aware that someone claiming to be from the U.S. Census Bureau has been going door-to-door. It is our recommendation that you do not give any personal information. The office has no knowledge of this, and after doing some research this is what we found:
Current U.S. Census Door-to-Door Activity
The U.S. Census Bureau does not currently conduct a nationwide door-to-door census in the way it did for the 2020 decennial count. The 2020 census’s final “nonresponse follow-up” (NRFU) phase involved up to 500,000 census takers visiting about 56 million households that had not yet responded, but that was a one-time, decade specific operation content.govdelivery.com.
For the 2030 decennial census, the Census Bureau is already planning changes, including using more administrative data (like tax and utility records) to count most Americans without requiring them to fill out paper forms Pew Research Center. This means that in the near term, door to door visits for the next census are unlikely to be the main method.
If you are seeing someone at your door claiming to be from the Census Bureau, it is not part of the current census process. The Census Bureau will only ask for your name, address, and other basic information, and will never request your full Social Security number, bank account number, or passwords Census.gov+1. You can verify legitimacy by checking the return address for “U.S. Census Bureau” or “U.S. Department of Commerce,” or by asking to see an ID badge with the Department of Commerce watermark WKBN.com+1.
Bottom line: There is no ongoing nationwide door to door census right now. Any such visits you see are likely from a different Census Bureau survey or a scam. Always verify the source before giving any personal information.
