BG City Council is updating ward boundaries. The last ward redistricting happened in 2002. Due to population changes, the deviation between the smallest and largest wards is 29%. In order to have the required substantially equal population, courts generally want a deviation of less than 10%. ⚖️

In order to have an open and transparent process, the public is invited to draw and submit ward maps for consideration. Residents are also encouraged to share their thoughts on the boundaries of neighborhoods and other communities of interest they feel should be taken into consideration. There will be two forums held where residents can learn more and get help creating a map. The deadline for submitting a map is the night of September 19th one minute before midnight. 🗺

BG City Council will hold its annual Strategic Planning Session on September 10, and I want to hear from you before we meet on what the City should prioritize in the coming year.

If there’s a particular street, intersection, neighborhood, park, or other issue you think needs attention, there’s space for that too. I’ll follow up with the relevant City department and work to get it resolved.

Bowling Green has changed quite a bit since 2002, but our ward boundaries haven’t been adjusted as our population has grown and shifted. As a result, some of our wards now have significantly more residents than others. This imbalance denies many Bowling Green residents fair and equal representation.

Following last week’s meeting with Trevor Martin at League of Women Voters of Ohio, Councilwoman Katelyn Elliott and I contacted the Wood County Board of Elections to begin discussing the process.

It’s important that we do this thoughtfully and transparently, with opportunities for residents to understand the proposed changes and provide input before any new map is adopted.

Thank you to League of Women Voters of Ohio and BG’s own Declan Wicks for offering their assistance as we work through the redistricting process.

Not a story I’ve shared with many, but several months ago an individual showed up at my home while I was at work and threatened my wife and children. It was an unsettling experience, and it also gave me a firsthand perspective on the license plate reader cameras discussed in this article.

After a protection order was issued, BGPD was able to use these cameras to help ensure the individual did not return to Bowling Green in violation of the order. For my family, and many of the survivors of domestic violence I work with on a daily basis, this isn’t an abstract debate. In many cases, these tools are a major factor providing peace of mind during very difficult situations.

I understand the legitimate privacy concerns that come with this kind of technology. Tools that allow law enforcement to collect information about vehicles and their movements need appropriate safeguards, transparency, and oversight. I appreciate the balance Bowling Green, OH Police Division is working to strike between using this technology for legitimate public safety purposes while protecting the privacy rights of our residents.
