Don’t just see the behavior. See the opportunity. 💙

When we talk about teens in foster care, it’s easy to focus on what we see on the outside; the anger, the defiance, the attitude, the poor choices, the walls they put up.

But what if we looked a little deeper?

What if instead of asking, “What’s wrong with this teen?” we asked, “What happened to this teen, and what opportunity do they need now?”

Many of these young people have experienced things no child should have to endure. Their behaviors may be their way of communicating pain, fear, disappointment, or a lack of trust. That doesn’t mean we excuse harmful behavior, but it does mean we look beyond the behavior to the person underneath it.

These teens deserve opportunities to experience stability.
They deserve opportunities to be heard.
They deserve opportunities to make mistakes and try again.
They deserve opportunities to discover their strengths.
They deserve opportunities to feel safe, valued, and accepted.
They deserve opportunities to build relationships with adults who won’t give up on them.

Most importantly, they deserve the opportunity to become more than the worst thing they’ve ever done or the hardest thing they’ve ever been through.

A teenager in foster care is not a problem to be fixed.

They are a young person with potential waiting to be seen.

Sometimes, all it takes is one person willing to look past the behavior, see the opportunity, and say:

“I see you. I believe in you. And I’m not giving up on you.”

Because every teen deserves to not be judged by a past they didn’t create. 💙

A child will be removed from their home today. Maybe you can be the calm they need in their time of storm.

We are in great need for homes, specifically for teens. Many within this demographic go without stable placement, which is heartbreaking and detrimental for these youths.
