Healthy Soil = Healthy Food = Healthy People

Lou Kozma, Jr is president of Hirzel Farms as well as the great-grandson of Swiss-born founder Carl Hirzel (the microbiologist who started farming due to prohibition).

Between the farm and the canning company, 14 4th and 5th generation family members are still involved with carrying on the family legacy in this way.

Lou credits his Uncle John with the decision to grow organically: as Round Up became available, he decided to focus on soil health. He got into cover crops and experimented with ways to reduce tillage. Hirzel Farms worked with postdocs in organic and sustainable agriculture and kept 100 acres continuously in trials because they didn't have literature to lean on to learn how to farm organically.

AIF is offering community garden plots for rent during the 2026 growing season. Grow flowers and vegetables to harvest for your family dinner table or plant a large plot for a bountiful harvest to share with your community. Frequent deliveries are made to local food banks.

Various sizes of plots, organic and conventional, are available ranging from a 4'x8' raised bed to a 40'x40' plot. Gather a group of friends. Make it a family affair. Spend some quite time alone. Rent a space that suits your needs. Use of water, hoses, tools, and a storage shed are included in the rental agreement.

Find the guidelines and agreement at https://www.agincubator.org/
