There are roughly 90 species of whales, and they are strictly divided into two sub-orders based on how they feed and their anatomy:

Baleen Whales (Mysticetes): These whales do not have teeth. Instead, they have bristly, fringed plates made of keratin (the same material as human fingernails) called baleen. They feed by gulping massive amounts of water and straining out tiny prey like krill, plankton, and small fish. Examples include the blue, humpback, gray, and fin whales.

Toothed Whales (Odontocetes): These whales possess actual teeth, which they use to catch and hold larger prey like fish, squid, and even other marine mammals. This category includes s***m whales, belugas, and narwhals. Fun fact: Orcas (Killer Whales) are actually the largest members of the dolphin family, but they fall under the toothed whale sub-order.
