We have about 1,470 Tribal members, 34 percent of whom live on our reservation, which comprises 24,000-acres located in Shawano County. We are committed to being good stewards of our economic, environmental and intellectual resources and we believe strongly in the power of education. In fact, the first public school teacher in Wisconsin was a female Mohican tribal member. We proudly operate the North Star Mohican Casino Resort – our sole gaming facility and our main source of revenue.

Official Statement of the Stockbridge-Munsee Band of Mohican Indians

In Loving Memory of Tribal Councilwoman Ella Kazik

It is with heavy hearts and profound sorrow that the Stockbridge-Munsee Band of Mohican Indians acknowledges the passing of Tribal Councilwoman Ella Kazik—a respected leader, a compassionate advocate, and a cherished member of our community.

Councilwoman Kazik dedicated her life to the service of our people. She carried her responsibilities with quiet strength, deep integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the well-being of the Stockbridge-Munsee Community. Her voice at the Council table reflected both wisdom and humility, always guided by a steadfast belief in the importance of sovereignty, cultural preservation, and the future of our Nation.

Ella’s leadership was grounded in care for others. She worked tirelessly to ensure that the needs of our Elders were honored, our youth were uplifted, and our traditions were preserved for generations yet to come. Whether through policy, advocacy, or simply lending a listening ear, she embodied the values of respect, responsibility, and unity that define us as Mohican people.

Beyond her role in governance, Ella will be remembered for her warmth, her kindness, and her ability to bring people together. She understood that leadership is not only about decisions—it is about relationships, compassion, and the strength of community. Her presence will be deeply missed in our chambers, our gatherings, and our daily lives.

As we mourn this tremendous loss, we also give thanks for Ella Kazik’s life and legacy. Her contributions have left a lasting imprint on our Nation, and her spirit will continue to guide us in the work ahead. We honor her by carrying forward the principles she upheld and the path she helped to shape.

To her family, we extend our deepest condolences and heartfelt prayers. We stand with you in this time of grief and remembrance, and we hold you close as part of our extended tribal family. May Ella’s journey onward be peaceful and may her memory remain a blessing to us all.

On this Memorial Day, we pause to reflect on the remarkable legacy of Native American service and patriotism, a tradition that has endured for more than 250 years. The Mohican Nation stands with deep gratitude, honoring the courage, dedication, and sacrifices made by Native Americans who have served our country across generations.

Their unwavering commitment to defending our sovereignty, freedoms, and values is a testament to the strength of their spirit and the depth of their love for this land. We recognize not only those who have fallen but also all who have stood in uniform, giving so much of themselves for the greater good. The Mohican Nation extends heartfelt appreciation to every veteran and family whose sacrifices have shaped the story of our nation.

Today, as we remember and honor, let us carry forward this legacy of service with pride and gratitude, inspired by those who have given the ultimate sacrifice. Thank you to all who have served—your bravery and dedication will never be forgotten. Anushiik/Oneewe
