Today we honor the memory and service of one of our two fallen heroes.
On June 4, 1959, Officer Tommy Roland was on duty and traveling down Wise Street across from the Lo-Boy Drive Inn (present day Dairy Queen) at 2:00 am when he was struck from behind by a drunk driver driving a wheat truck. Officer Roland’s patrol car was pushed over the curb and jammed against a tree in the front yard of 403 East Wise. The truck continued to follow the car and mashed it into a mass of twisted metal and the car burst into flames.
Officer Roland was transported to the old Bowie Hospital/Clinic (present day police department) where he was treated by Dr Berry Squyres. He gave the ultimate sacrifice at about 3:15am.
The drunk driver was arrested. The accident was investigated by Troopers ER Moore and Tom Brown.
A poem published in the Bowie News by T.W. Nichols read. He did not know when he left the hall. This would be his last and final call. Nor did he know when he went so free. He’d not be around when the clock struck three. But he was at his post of duty, when the loaded truck went through. And we didn’t know it hit him till the old fire whistle blew. So you never know my brother just what’s in a fellows plight. Till you’re watching in a city on a highway after night.
Thank you Officer Roland for your service and your ultimate sacrifice to the citizens of Bowie.
